Dear Kathy, When I read Bill’s obit in the Brandon Sun a short while ago, I was deeply saddened. He was by far the most influential person in my decision to return to music and to attend Brandon University. He was a constant inspiration to students, as you well know. You must be missing him terribly, and I only hope that you can take comfort in knowing that he shared his joy in living and his love of music with so many. Sincerely, Faye - Posted by: Faye Douglas (Former student and later a colleague) on: Nov 26, 2021
He was our high-school band Director and when I was 16 and a dreamboat. I know most of the teenage girls in the band will agree. He was also what the whole band needed at that moment. We had just represented the Province of Manitoba at the 67 OLYMPICS and had played on Capital Hill with the absolute worst band Director (his name was Kost). We were demoralized and embarrassed by our performances. The start of the new school year and we had a new band director. William Gordon. He lifted that band up and gave us confidence again in what we could do. William Gordon showed us that if we believed in ourselves we could do anything. - Posted by: Beverley Paley nee Kennedy (Student) on: Oct 18, 2021
I was a student in the Sisler High School band when Bill Gordon took over as our conductor after a miserable show at the United Band Concert held each year at Tec Voc High School. The very next year we appeared again after just one year under his guidance. Our band made the news that night and it was all thanks to Bill Gordon, It was a "rags to riches" story. I think all the girls had a crush on Bill and loved the way he would toss his hair as he conducted. He was an incredible musician and Manitoba was so fortunate to have had him as an instructor and conductor. - Posted by: Dianne Kennedy (student) on: Oct 18, 2021
Bill was the brass prof at Brandon U School of Music when I was a student in the 70s in the Music Ed stream of the BMus program. Even though my brass technique in that crash course ultimately left much to be desired (possibly to his amusement -- or tears!). Despite this, I found him to be a patient teacher who gave his time willingly. I am so sorry to hear of his passing; he contributed much to this faculty, and to the students who learned from him. My deep sympathies to Kathy and the family. - Posted by: Lynne McCarthy (Former student of Bill) on: Oct 16, 2021
