SCOTT: (Maud) Freda Scott. After 96 years of a life filled with love, adventure, and optimism, our beloved mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother passed away gently into the magnificent prairie sunset on Friday, October 29, 2021. Born to Philip and Mary Johnson on November 29, 1925, she grew up in North Shields, Northumberland, England with her three older brothers - Philip, Maurice, and Norman. Living in the small coastal town, she was in the direct line of fire and experienced many harsh realities of the Second World War. As a young wife and mother, she immigrated to Canada in 1948, as her engineering husband, Dennis Scott, was sent out to establish a number of generating stations across the prairies. Although it was a very difficult transition with no family support close by, she grew to love the warmth of the prairie people and the beautiful bright blue skies. Settling in Regina, she developed three lifelong passions - ballet, football (her beloved Roughriders), and cottage life. Eventually moving to Brandon in 1953, she focused on raising her four children and community activities. Later, she would work for The Specialty Shop and Dressler Optometry. Always believing in giving back to her community, she took on leadership roles in her church, Kinettes, and the resident council of Hobbs Manor. She enjoyed the fine arts community in Brandon, and participated in exercise groups well into her late eighties. She will always be held close in the hearts of her children: Jen Smith, Alison (Dave) Clement, Christopher Scott, and Lisa Scott; her grandchildren: Chris (Sabiha) Smith, Scott (Sasha) Smith, Christy (Carl) Chandler, Ryan Clement, Paige (Dillon) Rash, and Denny Rash; and her great-grand children: Keegan Smith, Caelan Smith, Abigail Chandler, Gwendolyn Chandler, and Freya Smith. Also cherishing her memory are her older brother, Norman Johnson, as well as her nieces: Jean (Mike) Pearce, Anne (Don) Gourlay, and Susan (Hedley) Pickering, and Freda's very dear friends. She lived her life with grace, tolerance, and a positive attitude. A private ceremony will be held at St. Matthew's Cathedral on Friday, November 12, 2021 at 2:00 p.m. with The Rt. Rev. Jim Njegovan officiating. The family invites you to watch the livestream of the Celebration of Freda's Life on Friday, November 12, at 2:00 p.m. by visiting Freda's tribute page at In honour of her memory, donations may be made to the St. Matthew's Cathedral Memorial Fund, 403-13th St., Brandon, MB, R7B 0N9.
