ASHTON, James Henry (Jim). It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of our father Jim Ashton, on January 12, 2022, at St. Norbert (Winnipeg), Manitoba, at the age of 84 years. He will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by wife Audrey, sons Kent and Doug Ashton, daughters-in-law Myrna McCoy and Patty Ashton, grandchildren Kelly and Erin Ashton, Connor and Alex Ashton, his brother David and sister-in-law Margaret-Ann Ashton, numerous nephews, nieces, cousins and friends and essentially the entire town of Rivers, Manitoba. Being born on his grandfather's farm at Rivers, Manitoba on November 20, 1937, Jim spent 83 years of his life in the Rivers area. After many years running the Ashton family farm, he spent several years as service manager at Forman Motors in Rivers. In true pioneer spirit, he became a leader in the community through his service off and on over the years as; a council member for the RM of Daly, President of the Kiwanis Club, President of the Rivers Golf and Country Club, Board Chairperson for the Rivers United Church and as captain of the Coffee Shop Debating Team. He was instrumental in many community initiatives including the rejuvenation of minor league baseball in the 1980s and the upgrading of the riverside Kiwanis Park East of town. His love of life was infectious. As the voice of the Rivers Jets and Legion Bingo, Jim was known for his big voice and big smile. He always had a warm, hearty greeting to those he would meet at the church, campground, curling rink, golf course, post office or anywhere downtown. No matter how busy or tired he may have been, he always made time to take his family camping, water skiing, throw a ball or work on a project together. There were always lots of hugs and laughter to be shared with family and friends. A memorial service will be held on a later date (TBA - pending gathering restrictions) at the Rivers United Church, 347 Main Street, Rivers. If friends so desire, in lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Jim's memory to the Rivers United Church. Dad will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved him.

  • Audrey, Kent, Doug & families. Sending love and prayers to each of you. So many memories of the family. From my younger days visiting at the farm where we always got sent home to Keewatin with fresh veggies from their garden (with my Dad - Jim B eating most of the peas haha) to when we moved to Rivers & them helping us settle into the community to when he said “you’re not to old to put over my knee but you’re old enough to call me Jim”(I was in my 40’s but until then he was always Mr. Ashton as he was my Dad’s best friend) I’ll remember how he called Dad “Chappy”. He will be missed by so many. Sincerest condolences. - Posted by: Shelley Glowa (nee Borrowman) (Family friend) on: Jan 22, 2022

  • Audrey and family Our deepest sympathy in the passing of Jim He was a great guy always had a smile on his face and as you said a big voice with a big hello whenever you saw him. I haven't lived in Rivers for a number of years but he was always so glad to see us any time we managed to be in his company. We will keep Audrey in our thoughts and prayers she will miss him terribly. He was a great guy and a great community volunteer. I don't remember the boys as they were pretty young when I left Rivers but you can be very proud of the dad you had Our deepest sympathy - Posted by: Dennis and Marlene Basso (Long time friend ) on: Jan 21, 2022

  • Our condolences to the entire Ashton family. Jim and Audrey were “neighbours” when we bought our land south of Rivers. Often would see Jim mowing the grass around the Pendennis cairn.
