STANFORD LEON FONTAINE
Zoongigaabawi Makwa
Strong Standing Bear

It is with heavy hearts we announce the passing of our beloved Dad, Stanford Fontaine on January 27, 2022, at the age of 83 at the Pine Falls Hospital.
Stanford was predeceased by his sons, Clayton "Gus", Mark, and Earl (Shirley); his parents, John Henry and Helen (Swampy); his siblings, Rose (Norbert), Maurice (Janet), Lizette (John Alfred), Paul, Richard, and Leona.
Stanford leaves to mourn his wife Lillian, children, Brenda, Warren, Donna, Merv, Ron, Rhonda (Frank), Sheila and Tara (Isaac), 22 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren, his sister Agnes Berthelette, his aunts, Terry and Sandra (Dennis), and his uncle Norman (Verdine), numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives, and friends.
Our dad was a Fort Alexander residential school survivor. He and his family moved from Sagkeeng to the Oo-za-we-kwun Centre situated at the old CFB Rivers adjacent to Rivers, Manitoba in the early 1970s for work. He returned home in the mid-1980s and worked for the community as a Band Constable for many years until he retired in the early 2000s. He loved to joke and tease, and he would often laugh the hardest at his own jokes. His favourite places were his home and the bingo hall. He could be found either at the hall in "his" spot or at home relaxing in his recliner and most often with his loved ones right next to him. He was a strong, hardworking man, he enjoyed his independence, took pride in his yard, and even made himself a garden in recent years. He is most known for his dedication and love for his family.
Our dad will be missed dearly by his family, and all who knew and loved him. Till we meet again - Ki-ka wabimingo minawa
We are sincerely grateful to our relatives, friends and community members who have given us support and comfort during this time of loss.
Special thank you to Claudette Guimond, Cara Guimond, Tanya Guimond, Laurie Guimond, Bonnie Bone, Crystal Fontaine, Mazey Morrisseau, Jackie Fontaine, Adrian Abraham, and Lloyd Guimond and to those that donated wood for the sacred fire. Also, to the staff at the Pine Falls Hospital and Sunnywood Manor Personal Care Home who showed him care and compassion.
Our dad returned home to his residence in Sagkeeng one last time for his wake service. A funeral mass for our dad was celebrated on Monday, January 31, 2022 at the St. Alexander Roman Catholic Church.

Condolences may be sent to the family c/o Spirit Road Funeral Services Inc., PO Box 200, Fort Alexander, Manitoba, R0E 0P0, 204-340-6490 or friends may leave a message of sympathy at spiritroadfunerals@gmail.com
