SAMUEL CLARKE CRAWFORD

Unexpectedly on February 9, 2022, Samuel Clarke Crawford, 88, of Winnipeg, Manitoba, passed away in St. Boniface Hospital in Winnipeg.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, February 18, 2022 at Glen Eden Funeral Home, 4477 Main Street, West St. Paul, with a catered reception afterwards. Private interment will follow, also at Glen Eden. Only those who have had at least two COVID vaccinations may attend and must provide proof of vaccination and a photo ID card when entering the funeral home.
Sam was born in Larne, Northern Ireland to parents Samuel and Martha Crawford on December 8, 1933. He married Elizabeth Crawford on October 10, 1957 at St. Enoch's Church in Belfast and together they immigrated to Canada shortly after. Once they docked in Montreal, they made their way to Winnipeg where they lived for the next 60-plus years. As a hard-working husband and father, Dad had several jobs with the City of Winnipeg over the years. He worked on trolley buses at Winnipeg Transit and as a Power Engineer, 5th Class at various city-owned buildings.
When he wasn't working, dad adored being outdoors. Fishing, hunting, and gardening were three of his favourite activities. Not to mention tinkering! There was very little he couldn't fix or build. Dad couldn't abide having nothing to do and kept himself busy around the house and yard.
Dad was a member of the Transit Wildlife Association since the late 1960s. Mom and dad spent their summers at the Transit Lodge on Eleanor Lake in the Whiteshell Provincial Park. Dad was never idle when he was there, either. The Lodge required lots of upkeep and dad and the other members worked hard during their vacations to maintain the cabin and grounds.
The fall was the time for dad and his black lab Maggie to go hunting. They would happily trudge through the frosty fields on the lookout for Canadian Geese. He always bragged about what a great retriever Maggie was and they rarely came home empty-handed.
Sam was predeceased by his parents, and brothers, Robert and Alexander (Sandy).
Sam will be deeply missed by his wife Elizabeth, children, Marlene, Samuel, Robert, Donna (Kris), and Kathy; grandchildren, Adam and Keown Jenken, Sam and Stacey Crawford, Robin, Rachel, Raquel and Nicole Crawford, and Kristen Genaille; great-grandchildren, Ariel, Austen, Shyla, and Tatum; cousin Jack Crawford and Jack's children, May, John and Lynn.
In Ireland, Sam is survived by siblings, Iris, Stuart (Elizabeth), Sarah, Mary (Barry), Hester, Marlene (Jim) Murray, and many nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to the Manitoba Wildlife Federation, an organization with whom Sam had a longstanding relationship.

Condolences & Memories (6 entries)

  • Samuel Crawford was my Father-in-law,through Marriage to his son Robert,.. When was first meeting his new twin granddaughter's, he was so proud of them....He said , they were his little Irish Beauties!...He would come next door , ..almost every day to visit them... He would say to me, ..where's my Irish Beauties....I will never forget that about him!...He taught me how to hold them at the same time ...to carry them...lol...who knew such a large man could be so gentle!...He would sit with me for hours at a time and hold them both in his arms at the kitchen table!...Then when Raquel was born he said she was a spitting image of her own Father...and also called her his little newest Irish Beauty....I could always count on Sam to make me feel wanted in his family,. He was always so kind to me!.. I will always love Him as Father,..Sam the Angels will carry you on their wings of love home to Heaven!...your daughter -in-law Dana... - Posted by: Dana Moore/(Dana Crawford) (Daughter-in-law) on: Feb 21, 2022

  • I'm gonna miss you so so much Grandpa 😢💔 I was just remembering our last visit on January 31st, 2022 and how you said my cabbage rolls were delicious and that the 🍌 bread 🍞 was so good 🥰 You had jokingly said to me and pointed at Shyla and said that's just how you were when you were younger and I just laughed and you smiled 😃 On the way out as we we're getting ready to leave, Shyla said Bye Grandma, Bye Grandpa, looking right at you and you had the biggest smile and said Goodbye Goodbye 👋 I never thought that was our last final goodbyes 😪😭😭 I am glad Shyla got to spend 4 years with you and that's a very nice blessing! • To the family, our condolences for you loss. Sam was a great guy and a good friend he will be very missed, he would call me Paggy all the time and would call me at least once or twice a month to check up on my dad Joe which was his longtime friend just to see how he was doing. I remember dad bring me over there lots as a young girl hanging out with Donna and Cathy and the beautiful garden they always had in the back yard. Good memories that will last a lifetime. RIP Sam.
