RICHARD REGINALD OTTENBREIT
March 12, 1937 – March 17, 2022

Born on a farm near Beausejour, Manitoba, Richard attended Cromwell, Ladywood, and Beausejour schools, and entered Normal School in 1954.
Richard's career as an educator covered a period of forty-five years - beginning at a one-room country school (Corrall School District) in 1955 and ending in retirement at the University of Winnipeg in 2000.
During his early years Richard took time off from teaching time to time to complete his B.A. (1961); B.Ed. (1963); M.A. (1970); and M.Ed. (1978) degrees.
While researching material for a Canadian literature curriculum, Richard developed an interest in Manitoba writer F. P. Grove - an interest that not only continued into retirement but resulted in an M.A. thesis at the University of North Dakota in 1970.
During the last twenty years before retirement Richard taught study skills seminars and education courses at the U. of W.
Richard believed strongly in the value of an education and felt privileged to be able to make it his life's work.
Richard leaves behind wife Sandra, daughters, Kim (Rick) and Kerilee (Rob), brothers, Ernie (Marge) and Leonard (Kim), brother-in-law Ian Munro (Lorna) and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, Mary and Anton, sister Phyllis (Wally), and brothers-in-law, Hugh and Rody Munro.
Cremation has taken place. There will be no formal service and entombment is at Glen Eden columbarium.

  • Dear Aunty Sandy, Kim and Keri, My deepest sympathy to you all. I have so many special memories of the times our families spent together. They are near and dear to my heart, and I often think back about those happy times many years ago. I hope we can all re-connect someday soon. May you have peace and comfort at this difficult time, knowing that others are thinking of you. ~ With Love, sincerely, Leah. - Posted by: Leah Kellett (nee Ottenbreit) (Niece) on: Apr 08, 2022

  • Thinking of the family at this sad time. - Posted by: Tara and Mark Sokolowski (Friends) on: Mar 27, 2022

  • Sympathy to Sandra, her children and to Ian, her brother on the loss of her husband Richard. Our family farm was just north of the teacherage cottage where the Munro family lived while their Mom, Dorothy taught at the Sand Hill school in the years prior to the school’s closure. Sandra, may your good memories of your late husband’s love help through this sad time in your life. - Posted by: Kathy Krawchuk Fecio (Acquaintance from years ago) on: Mar 26, 2022
