ELIZABETH KEOWN CRAWFORD
December 19, 1937 - April 12, 2022
Unexpectedly on April 12, 2022, Elizabeth Keown Crawford, 84, of Winnipeg, Manitoba, passed away in St. Boniface Hospital in Winnipeg.
Funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, April 25, 2022 at Glen Eden Funeral Home, 4477 Main Street, West St. Paul, with a catered reception afterwards. Private interment will follow, also at Glen Eden.
Elizabeth was born in Belfast, Northern Ireland, to parents, Thomas and Annie (nee Tilson) Crawford on December 19, 1937. She married Samuel Crawford on October 10, 1957 at St. Enoch's Church in Belfast and together they immigrated to Canada shortly after. Mom was terribly seasick and spent most of the voyage in her cabin. She never did find her sea legs and avoided all bodies of water for the rest of her life. Once they docked in Montreal, they made their way to Winnipeg where they lived for the next 60-plus years. As a hard-working wife and mother, mom had several jobs over the years in addition to raising five kids. She started out working as a hotel chambermaid and eventually retired as an over-night supervisor at the Salisbury House on Main and Matheson.
Mom was forever busy around the house and yard. She rarely made time for herself, focusing instead on looking after her husband, children, grandchildren, home and yard. When she did have some quiet time, she loved to read, visit with her friends, and knit a never-ending supply of scarves, mittens and slippers. She also loved bowling and belonged to a league back in the 1970s.
Mom was a member of the Transit Wildlife Association since the late 60s. Mom and dad spent their summers at the Transit Lodge on Eleanor Lake in the Whiteshell Provincial Park. Mom was never idle when she was there, either. The Lodge required lots of upkeep and, along with dad and other members, she worked hard during her summer vacations. We could occasionally talk mom into going for a boat ride or dipping her toes in the lake, but she preferred to keep her feet on the earth and leave the water sports to others. It was only dad who could talk her into going out fishing in the boat for a couple of hours.
Although mom lived the majority of her life in Winnipeg, Ireland was always Home. She was raised in Belfast by her godmother who she affectionately called her granny. Mom came from a very small family and we don't know much about her parents, but mom was especially close to her Aunty Kathleen Haggerty, Kathleen's husband Hubert and their daughter Anne.
Elizabeth was predeceased by her husband Samuel Clarke Crawford in February 2022.
She will be deeply missed by her children, Marlene, Samuel, Robert, Donna (Kris Hagen), and Kathy. Grandchildren, Adam (Randey Goetz) and Keown Jenken, Sam and Stacey Crawford, Robin, Rachel, Raquel and Nicole Crawford, and Kristen Genaille. Great-Grandchildren, Ariel, Austen, Shyla, and Tatum.
In Ireland, Elizabeth is survived by her cousin Anne; sisters and brothers-in-law, Iris, Stuart (Elizabeth), Sarah, Mary (Barry), Hester, Marlene (Jim) Murray, and many nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to the Winnipeg Humane Society, 45 Hurst Way, Winnipeg, MB R3T 0R3, 204-982-2021.
