LUCIA (LUCY) GIANCOLA
March 6, 1936 - April 30, 2022

Peacefully on April 30, 2022, Lucia (Lucy) Giancola, mom, nonna, sister, aunt and friend passed away in the comfort of her home surrounded by the love of her family.
Mom was born in Castelpetroso, Isernia, Italy on March 6, 1936, to Maria and Giuseppe Forte. Mom married her beloved husband Giovanni (John) Giancola in 1953 and they were together for 59 years before dad's passing in 2012. Their son Angelo was born in 1955 and not long after Gabriele in 1956. The four of them journeyed on an adventure to Canada in 1957, for better opportunities. After a few short years of living in rural Manitoba they chose to make Winnipeg their home. Daughter Rosina (Rosie) was born in 1965 and Lisa following in 1969. Their family was now complete.
Mom worked for Perth's and Caesar's Palace in Polo Park retiring in 1996. Mom enjoyed the simple things in life; gardening, shopping, meeting and having lunch with her friends, playing cards with her siblings, cooking, baking and traveling. Her greatest joys were family gatherings and supporting her grandchildren and great grandchildren in their activities, Nonna was their #1 fan! Mom/Nonna made every oner of us feel special for who we are and was very proud, her family was the centre of her world. Mom's beautiful smile brightened up any room and we will forever miss our family's most precious gift.
With courage and determination, Mom/Nonna stoically battled cancer for the last seven months maintaining her independence until her last days.
Left to forever cherish her memory are her sons, Angelo (Debbie), Gabriele (Patricia), Rosina (Jack Gordon), Lisa (Phillip Tokarz); 10 grandchildren, as well as four great-grandchildren, and a large extended family both in Canada and Italy.
Waiting to welcome her home in heaven and whom she missed dearly, her beloved husband Giovanni, her mom and dad, and grandson Evan.
We are forever grateful for mom's team of caregivers, Dr. Paige, Dr. Shariff, Dr. Paul; nurses, Nubia, Tamara, Natalie, Angela, and all of the other wonderful staff at CancerCare and Palliative Care. Special thanks to the Pharmacy team at Tyndall Park Safeway for their professionalism and caring manner.
Viewing will be held on Thursday, May 12 from 10:00 a.m. to 10:50 a.m., Eulogy and Funeral Mass with Fr. Sam Argenziano to follow at Holy Rosary Church, 510 River Ave., Winnipeg, MB.

Condolences & Memories (5 entries)

  • Rosie, I am so very sorry your mom, Lucy, has passed. My heart is sad. I just loved your mom. I always felt welcomed and loved by your mom and your dad. I always cherished my time with your family. Your mom did have the best smile. And she was a great cook. To this day, italian food is my favorite comfort food. As Mother's day is here tomorrow, my prayers are with your family. Please pass on my love to Lisa and I wish for peace for your family at this very difficult time. Much love, Cindy - Posted by: Cindy Klippenstein (Friend) on: May 07, 2022

  • Countless hearts broke on April 30th when Lucy left us. She was so kind and treated everyone special. I’ve always thought the world of her and her beautiful heart. I’m so very sorry, Angelo, Gabe, Rosina and Lisa and your families and to Michael who adored her. I have so many memories of Lucy, from running down Portage in the rain carrying groceries so we would get back in time to watch Another World, or when she got her first perm that turned into an Afro and we tried to fix it before John got home. He loved it but broke down laughing because we were trying to fix it using forks. In 2015 I was recovering from treatments and I opened my apartment door to find Lucy standing there with Michael. She gave me a huge hug and it was like time had stood still between us, she was the same loving Lucy. She cared about everyone. I got to hear about her Vegas trip with the girls to all the grandchildren and great grandchildren stories. Upon leaving she said you’re going to be ok then said “I really miss John”. I hope the family find some comfort in knowing she is now with him. She is a treasure that will never be forgotten. She will be in my heart forever. Love and hugs to the Giancola family.
