• It was a great privilege to know Clarence and to encourage him to share his story. And what a story. Of adventure, grand ideas, strong opinions, compassion for his fellow man, purpose in his community and his great love for his Adeline. While I was the leader, Clarence was not a follower. He wrote what he believed, what he knew, and no class was complete without his contribution. Clarence's last piece of writing is entitled Changes and I would like to share it with you. In the grip of its frozen state, The ice slowly absorbs the heat of the sun, Breaking free from its mastery, The river rises forcefully, From midstream it widens to meet the southern flow, Daily, this process is repeated, Then breaking free, the river comes to life, Angrily uprooting trees, And taking debris in its path, Chunks of ice in formation, Tussle each other for space, Being forced from bank to bank, Competing with debris at increasing speed. Morning sunlight shines gently on the water, As it shimmers through the trees, Soon the view will be obscured, With foliage concealing the light. Soon the trees will come alive, Birds will nest once more, Sounds will emanate from the park, Grass will grow, the river will abate, Rain will fall and a rainbow will appear in the eastern horizon. • So sad to hear of Clarence's passing. He was a soft spoken man but surprised many with his quick wit and comebacks. I called him CC Rider because of his initials and love of motorbikes, he would always reply that's "Easy Rider" young man. His other passion besides family and motorbikes was politics. He was more than happy to engage someone about what was happening in the world of politics. I worked with Clarence for many many years at the Department of Highways and I know I speak for everyone there that it was a privilege to have worked with him and more to have known him.
