TAKIS (CHRIS) IACOVIDES
Christakis Iacovides, ('Takis' to his beloved friends and family), left this world on May 31, 2022.
He is remembered by his wife Stella; his sons, Harris (Murdoch) and Stavros (Kelly); his cousins, Katie Varsamis and Hans Veenhuyzen; nephew and niece Yorgo Veenhuyzen (Jan) and Carla van der Zweep (John); as well as family and friends from all over the world.
Takis was born in Larnaca, Cyprus on December 26, 1946. It was there that he met and married the love of his life Stella, and started his family with the birth of his sons. Takis and Stella moved their young family overseas on Christmas Eve 1974, due to political unrest in Cyprus. They crossed the globe to join family in Winnipeg and start a new life in Canada. Takis was supported by, and became an influential member of the thriving Greek community in his new home. He became a teacher and eventually the Principal of the Greek School and the President of the Greek Community. He took joy in celebrating his Greek and Cypriot heritage, whether through volunteer work at Folklorama or manning the grill at a BBQ with family and friends.
Takis practiced as a City of Winnipeg Health Inspector for 30 years, a career that he loved and allowed him to support his beloved family. He loved Winnipeg and Canada and became a stalwart hockey fan.
Takis was loved and respected by all who met him. He risked much to start a new life in a foreign land with his family and not only survived, but thrived. We will miss him every day but keep him in our hearts forever.
Funeral service will be held on Wednesday, June 8, 2022, at 11:00 a.m., at St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church, 2255 Grant Ave. Interment to follow at Chapel Lawn.
In lieu of flowers, please make any donations to St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church or the Winnipeg Greek School.
