WIELGOSH: Bernie passed away peacefully on Thursday June 2, 2022 with his wife and daughters by his side. Bernie was born in Brandon on April 29th, 1931, to parents Walter and Florence Wielgosz, and had a twin sister Bernice. He spent his early years enjoying life on McDonald Avenue with his family and many friends. At the age of 16 Bernie started his career with the CN Railway where he worked for 39 years. He married Mary (Gudz) in 1953, and had two daughters Shelley and Chris. Together with his wife he enjoyed vacationing after retirement, and visited countless destinations. Bernie wanted to visit his home country of Poland to meet the many cousins they had corresponded with a lifetime. That trip was definitely near and dear to his heart. He was blessed with three grandchildren, Elisa and Vaughan Verinder, Tyler Coulter and great-granddaughter Kaia Verinder. He enjoyed many special times with his grandkids. He was the proudest Grandpa in the stands watching his grandson Ty play for the Brandon Wheat Kings. Bernie took great pride in his surroundings, you would always find him sweeping the sidewalks, painting, and washing and polishing his car. He loved people and always had a funny story to share. He will be remembered fondly by his numerous nieces, nephews and life-long friends. Bernie was predeceased by his parents, siblings Walter (Connie), Charlie (Ann), Eddie (Glenda), Josephine (Roy Gregoire), Bernice (Garnett Browett), Jean (Jim Ryan), brother-in laws Herbie Gudz (Sophie), Frank Gudz (Connie), & nephew Garry Gudz. He is survived by his loving wife of 69 years Mary, daughters and son-in-law's Shelley (Richard Verinder), Chris (Dale Coulter), grandchildren and many nieces, nephews and extended family. A private family burial was held at Rosewood Memorial Gardens on Wednesday, June 8th and a Celebration of Bernie's Life was held at the Sokol Hall on Thursday, June 9th. Special thanks to the staff at BRHC and Brockie Donovan Funeral Home for all their care and compassion during this difficult time. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Bernie's memory to the Brandon Regional Health Centre Foundation, 150 McTavish Avenue East, Brandon, MB R7A 2B3.
Rest easy, you will be missed by all, we love you.

  • Our condolences Mary and family. Bernie was a lively guy always with a smile. It has been a privilege to know Bernie and Mary my entire life. Ed & Audrey Rosenberg - Posted by: Ed Rosenberg (Family friend ) on: Jun 20, 2022

  • Bernie mentored new-hires like me to learn the traffic reporting business at the CN Brandon Servocentre in the 1970s. He was a patient tutor, with a wry sense of humour, always a pleasure to work with. - Posted by: Greg (Former colleague @ CN Brandon Servocentre) on: Jun 18, 2022
