DANIEL EDGAR LACH
August 31, 1961 – June 30, 2022

Suddenly and quickly Daniel left us on June 30, 2022 at the age of 60. Danny was born on August 31, 1961 to Alice (nee Hanebauer) and Helmut Lach, and little brother to Marion and Janet.
Dan was born with developmental disabilities, but even as a man of few words, he impacted the lives of everyone who met him. Whatever your encounter with him was, you likely learned something or felt something.
For over 35 years, Danny worked at Community Ambitions (formerly Westwood Vocational). His commitment to his job and his love for his colleagues and care providers alike will be fondly remembered by all who knew him.
Even with limited abilities, Danny enjoyed travelling with Mom and Dad, working at the sod farm picking up pallets with his tractor, clearing brush, building bonfires and chopping wood at the family cottage at Hillside Beach. He was always a welcome guest at the cottages of aunts, uncles and cousins who lovingly spent time with him and provided him with endless treats and snacks.
Dan was a loving uncle to his nieces, Christina and Catherine. Their regular visits would always include some shenanigans, performances, beach adventures, KFC and A&W, movie nights, dance parties, a whole bunch of hugs and kisses, along with a few bops on the head.
After Dad's passing in 1993, Dan moved with Mom to Henderson on the Red. After a few years of living with retirees, a number of amazing people orchestrated Dan's next chapter. Peter Court and Wendy Weisbrot found two amazing angels - - Laura and Jamie Hilland. Dan went to spend a night - and ended up being a part of their family for over 20 years! As their family grew with the births of Jack, Sawyer and Ada, our family grew as well. The Lach family is forever grateful for the loving environment and the incredible life the Hillands provided for Danny.
After Mom died in 2015, Dan continued his routine of visiting the family condo twice a week as well as weekend visits to the beach. Respite providers who often became family members ensured Dan was well taken of. Dare Olorunfemi in particular helped walk Dan through Mom's passing and will always have a special place in our hearts.
Dan is survived by his family Laura, Jamie, Jack, Sawyer and Ada Hilland, his roommates Lee and Nathan, all his friends at Community Ambitions, his sister Janet, best bud and brother-in-law Randy, sister Marion, brother-in-law David, nieces, Christina (Teenie) and Catherine (Kakran), nephew-in-law Erik, and great-nephew Simon, who due to Covid, he only met on FaceTime. Many cousins in Winnipeg and Germany, along with his Tante Helga in Germany will remember Danny with love.
The Hilland and Lach families wish to send love and thanks to everyone who loved Dan, taught Dan, helped him and nurtured him. You all enriched his life, as we know he enriched yours as well. Thank you.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, July 13, at Glen Eden at 10:00 a.m. with Pastor Annemarie MacIntosh officiating. As there may be immunocompromised people in attendance, we ask that you be vaccinated and wear a mask. As much as we appreciate your love and support, we will save hugs for a later time.
Alternatively, you are welcome to join us virtually at the time of the service by following this link: https://afterword.com/stories/daniel-lach
There are few ways to celebrate Dan: Be kind to those less fortunate. Teach. Learn. Love. Dance to Michael Jackson. Watch Star Wars. Eat Ice Cream. Eat more ice cream. Be someone's super hero.

Condolences & Memories (1 entries)

  • My heartfelt condolences to the Lach-Schmidt and Hilland families. I am lucky beyond measure to have met Danny. Where he was, there was love and caring, togetherness and celebration, and always appreciation for the finer things in life like the beach, movies, french fries and ice cream. I cherish the sweet memories. - Posted by: Barbara (Spitzner) Mackie (family friend) on: Jul 10, 2022
