ELLSWORTH GERALD SMITH

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Ellsworth Smith on July 22, 2022, at the age of 75. As he wished, he was able to stay at home surrounded by his family. He was born in Halifax, NS on October 26, 1946.
He is survived by his loving wife Anita, of 51 years; their children, Jennifer (William), Dana (Tara) and Allison (Mark); and grandchildren, Colton, Danielle, Nathan, Adam, Sarah and Alex all of Winnipeg. He also leaves behind his sister, Carolyn (Gerald) Settle of NS; brother-in-law, Alvah Cole (Nancy); sisters-in-law, Lois (Jim) Steele and Mary (Mike) Ferguson all of NB; several nieces and nephews, as well as his childhood friend Don Rushton of NS.
Ellsworth was a kind and loving husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend, who was happiest when spending time with his family. He was always keen to share knowledge and trivia on a wide range of subjects, and was especially fond of history. He also took pleasure in words, loved to talk, and especially enjoyed making the children of the family laugh.
He enjoyed working with his hands and did so as a machinist at CNR, first in Moncton, NB before transferring to the CN Shops in Transcona.
He took pleasure in car maintenance and kept the family vehicles shining on the outside and purring on the inside. He was eager to fix anything around the house that needed it and tackled home and cottage renovations with vigor.
He and Anita were fortunate to be able to travel abroad. Ellsworth enjoyed a long retirement with summers at the cottage and winters in Florida while reminding us that family were always welcome.
His strength of character made us proud, and he will be greatly missed.
The family would like to express Ellsworth's and our appreciation to everyone at St. Boniface Hospital, Health Sciences Centre, in addition to the team of care providers accessed through the WRHA's Palliative Care Program.
In keeping with his wishes, cremation has taken place and a private family gathering is planned.
If desired, donations may be made to CancerCare Manitoba or the Winnipeg Humane Society.

Condolences & Memories (2 entries)

  • I was thinking of Ellsworth today although I have not seen him since high school. He has crossed my mind many times over the decades and I am genuinely shocked to come upon his obituary after putting his name in Google. I remember he had an amazing car - (perhaps a Lincoln Continental) and we could semi-convince the girls that we were important rock stars in our limo! Shortly thereafter he got the first edition of a Ford Mustang. Man - he looked so cool 😎! I had a huge respect for his intelligence and judgement. I’m glad to hear that he went on to have a happy marriage, loving family and long retirement. He had an impact on my life and, as a teenager, encouraged me to follow my own path. I’m so glad he did. I only wish we could have reconnected while he was alive. My condolences to his family. I’m grateful that I knew him. Shaun Murphy - Posted by: Shaun D. Murphy (High School Friend) on: Aug 27, 2022
