JOHN YAROSLAV SCHUR
January 24, 1928 - October 4, 2022
It is with great sorrow and heavy hearts that we announce the passing of John Yaroslav Schur, beloved husband, father, and grandfather, on October 4, 2022, at St. Boniface Hospital.
Yaroslav Schur was a talented Ukrainian baritone soloist, choral conductor, music teacher with the Winnipeg School Division and teacher in "Ridna Shkola" Ukrainian schools. His expansive musical career included recitals and performances at many concerts in Winnipeg, across Canada, in the United States, and abroad. He appeared with the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra, the Manitoba Opera Association, and the Ukrainian Theatre.
Yaroslav was considered one of the foremost interpreters of the Ukrainian song. With his excellent voice and musical ability, he was able to produce not only inexhaustible power but also sensitivity, that garnered him many accolades. He was interested in fostering and instilling in the young an understanding and love for Ukrainian music, culture, and tradition.
Yaroslav was a man of deep faith. He was kind, honest, loyal, good- natured and hard-working. He loved his family; they meant everything to him. He will be missed by many.
Our heartfelt thanks to Drs. F. Sikora, P. Marzban, B. Salamon, and R, Leicht for their excellent care over the years and to the St. Boniface medical and palliative team for their compassionate care and support.
Prayers will be sung on Friday, October 21, 2022, at 7:00 p.m. and Divine Liturgy will be held on Saturday, October 22, 2022, at 10:00 a.m., both at Sts. Vladimir & Olga Cathedral, 115 McGregor Street, Winnipeg, MB. Interment to follow at All Saints Cemetery.

Where do I begin to say what a nice man John was. Met him and Rosemarie in Texas and he was the only man that ever kissed my hand in friendship. He graced us with his beautiful voice many times in Texas and was always happy to see you. Even though he suffered with ailments, he never let us see his pain. Always had a smile and offered us his hospitality. Rest in peace my friend. - Posted by: Helga and JR Henkel (Friends from P2P texas) on: Oct 19, 2022

My most sincere condolences to the entire family. My memories of Mr Schur go back 55 years when he was one of the parents who car-pooled all us children to Ukrainian school. He was always a happy man who had a glint in his eyes and a smile for everyone. He was a talented musician and tried to Instill his love of music into the youth with whom he crossed paths. May he Rest In Peace. And may the memories of his kindness soothe the family at this time. Vichnaya Pamyat. - Posted by: Martha Shepertycky (Neighbour) on: Oct 15, 2022
