CATHERINE DICKIE
(nee JOHNSON)
May 10, 1947 - October 17, 2022
Cathy passed away peacefully at St. Boniface hospital on October 17. She is survived by her loving husband Dave, daughters Chris (Paddy, Taylor, Liam and Kyra) and Colleen (Shane, Aidan and Charlie). She is also survived by her siblings Carol, Sandy, Marion, Barbie, Judy, Bill, Gordie and sister-in-law Barb Hodgkinson. Also, many cousins, nieces and nephews. Every one of them much loved. Also, her Grand Doggies Goose and Whiskey. She is predeceased by her parents Dorothy and Herb, sister Dot and infant son Jamie.
She was born May 10, 1947 in Selkirk, Manitoba to Dorothy and Carl Herbert Johnson. She grew up in West Kildonan in a small house with 8 siblings. During her school days, she played a number of sports, despite her small stature, she even played basketball well, claiming that it helped to be able to run between her opponent's legs. After high school, mom went to school at the General Hospital School of Nursing, graduating in 1969. She married Dave Dickie in 1968 and started their family together. Children Christine, Colleen and Jamie came along. Sadly, Jamie passed away shortly after birth and mom never fully recovered from losing her baby boy.
While raising a young family, mom started her 30 plus year career as a gerontological nurse. She worked at Middlechurch Home for the majority of her career, providing excellent care to her beloved residents and making countless lifelong friends. Mom's career ended suddenly with her cancer diagnosis but she kept in touch with her amazing and supportive friends who continued to offer her love, support and laughter right up to her passing.
Cathy seemed to make friends everywhere she went and cherished you all right up to her last breath. Her best friend was always her twin sister Barb, they always had the best of times together and often knew what the other was thinking without saying a word.
She loved being a wife and mother and was married to Dave for 53 years. She was a fun loving and proud mom who instilled her compassionate nature and fun spirit into her 2 daughters who followed in her footsteps by choosing careers in the medical field.
Cathy adored her 5 grandchildren and supported them with an avid interest in their sports, school activities and of course was always interested in their love lives, much to their embarrassment. She always kept them laughing.
The family would like to the staff of 6E at St. Boniface Hospital for their compassionate care.
A Celebration of her life will take place Wednesday, October 26, 2022, at 2:00 p.m. with reception to follow at Glen Eden Funeral Chapel, 4477 Main Street, West St. Paul, MB. Cremation has taken place, a private burial service to occur at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Siloam Mission or Cancer Care Manitoba.
Mom…We will forever miss your light, laughter and eternal optimism.

As a brand new social worker at MCH I was often overwhelmed and seen by select nurses as the enemy rather that a part of the team. That was never the case with Cathy. She always made me feel that my role was an important and valued part of the lives of the residents at MCH. Cathy was an amazing nurse and person. I have and always will have the fondness memories of her. - Posted by: Katherine Cameron (Staff at Middlechurch for 10 years. ) on: Nov 06, 2022

Dear Dave, Colleen, Christine and all you “Johnson kids”! It makes me incredibly sad that Cathy is gone. I remember when I first met her at Carol’s and the whole gang and couldn’t figure who was who for the longest time! I also remember wherever Cathy was there was fun, especially at Granite lake. Well she’s with Bill now probably shooting the breeze and having fun again. Losing a loved one is hard and for you Dave, Christine and Colleen, I pray that you find peace in your hearts. Sincere condolences to Dave and all the family during this difficult time. I know how hard it is to lose someone so special and so deeply loved and I wish you grace and ease through it all. May the memories of time with Cathy sustain you and soften the days somehow. She was a bright light for all of us - so genuinely caring, kind and wise. Always fun to be around, always willing to help anyone in her uniquely beautiful way, and always up for a laugh or share a cry or just listen. She will be greatly missed and I feel Blessed to have known and loved her. " You can Rest in Peace now, dear Cathy".
