COWLTHORP: With gratitude for her long healthy life, it is also with sadness that we announce the death of our beloved mother and grandmother, Esther Marie Cowlthorp (Nee: Clemmensen), aged 82. She will be fondly remembered by her son Rick Shalala; her daughter and son-in-law Wendy and Tim Graham; her grandchildren Michael, Janessa and Meghan Millar; her brother David; and sister Linda. Esther was predeceased by her parents Swain and Isabella Clemmensen; her husband of 30 years Clare Arnett Cowlthorp; her sister and brother-in-law Betty and Wesley McDonald; and brothers Frank and James. Esther was born on February 16, 1940, in Swan River, MB. She held many responsibilities as the eldest child and was also a very bright student. In her early adult years, she worked on the Air Base in Gimli Manitoba. Later becoming a nurse, Esther worked passionately at her career for over 20 years, eventually retiring from BRHC. She spoke highly of the many friends she made at BRHC and often reminisced about her years there. After retirement, she worked on the lunch program at George Fitton School and was also an Education Assistant. She was well respected by many generations of students. They lovingly referred to her as Mrs. C. and didn't hesitate to run up to her with a giant hug at the mall, her absolute favorite thing. Esther also took her job as a grandmother incredibly seriously. She made every effort to make her grandchildren feel loved, supported and empowered. She was also an advocate for women's rights, nurse's rights, and nearest to her heart, children's educational rights. She was a light in many lives and will be greatly missed. A special Thank you to the A3 Angels and entire healthcare team at the Assiniboine Centre. Your excellent care was a great comfort to Esther during her final weeks and battle with cancer. In accordance with Esther's wishes, there will not be a service. Her ashes will be interred with those of her husband Clare's at the Wawanesa Cemetery. Donations in Esther's name may be made to the Western Manitoba Regional Library.
