ELIZABETH (BETTY) WIELER
It is with much sadness that we announce the passing of Elizabeth (Betty) Wieler on November 30, 2022, at Riverview Health Centre in Winnipeg.
Elizabeth was born in 1942 on the small family farm near Elm Creek, Manitoba during a snowstorm. She was the fourth in a family of five girls and one boy, born to Peter and Nettie Wieler.
Betty excelled at school and after graduation she moved to Winnipeg to attend Secretarial College. She was later employed by London Life Insurance Company and eventually became Office Manager. Throughout her career she developed many friendships, some of which continue to this day. As much as she loved her work, she was fortunate to experience Freedom 53 which was two years earlier than her company's slogan.
Betty wanted to see the world and she travelled extensively. She planned her many trips across the globe and spoke often of being able to experience much of the world's beauty. She knew how fortunate she was. As the years went by, she was content to spend a good part of each winter in many of the southern States where she was able to escape Manitoba's winters.
Betty was a proficient seamstress and sewed for friends, the church as well as her own clothes. She also sewed countless Halloween costumes. She enjoyed reading and crossword puzzles.
After retirement, Betty volunteered at a variety of organizations, using her many skills to help others.
Betty was predeceased by her parents and her sisters, Lillian, Dorothy and Jean. She is survived by her sister Florence and brother Jim. Also remembering her are many nieces, nephews and cousins.
She had many friends across Canada. Betty enjoyed their many email chats.
Especially mourning Betty's passing is her best friend Ann Wiebe and her husband Bob and their family. Ann and Betty's friendship started in school and endured for 64 years. Betty was also very close to her cousin Cheryl Nachtigal. Betty was so grateful for Cheryl's delicious ready to eat meals as well as her friendship. Betty had a close relationship with her niece Kim Debreczeni who will miss her guidance and support.
Betty was able to live independently until her diagnosis with Multiple Myeloma. She was admitted to hospital at the end of September and passed away from renal failure, a complication of the cancer.
We would like to thank the doctors, nurses and health care aides at St. Boniface and Riverview for their compassion when caring for Betty.
Betty was devoted to God and was a member of the Faith Bible Church where she made valuable friendships. Pastor James Barber and Betty's good friend Bob Wiebe, two men she admired and respected, will conduct the service at Faith Bible Church 600 Minto St., Winnipeg on December 14, 2022, at 11:00 a.m. The service will be taped and posted to faithbiblechurch.ca on the evening of December 14.
A photo-biography, as well as memories and stories published by those who knew her are available at EthicalDeathCare.com.
