ROSA (ROSE) MARIA SCOTT
(nee DE KONING)
July 7, 1940 December 2, 2022
With heavy hearts, we announce that Rose passed away on December 2 in hospital at the age of 82 years.
She was predeceased by her loving husband Bill (Scotty) Scott; and will be missed by her son Gerry Hunker (Nicole); stepdaughters, Roberta (Bobbie) Dukelow and Jackie Scott; and grandchildren, Myles, Shea, Roan, and Robert.
Rose is admired for her strong will and independent nature while managing to be a caring and loving mother / Oma / sister and friend to her family and close circle.
As a teenager immigrating with parents and six (of seven) siblings from Amsterdam to Southern Ontario after the Second World War Rose experienced hard times and hard work. Those experiences helped forge the sense of humour that permeates the de Koning family and is now recognizable in her grandchildren.
At a young age Rose found work and simultaneously managed to educate herself to improve her opportunities. Her independence transcended to include her loved ones as Rose always strove to ensure the well-being of the family. Over her life Rose formed strong and meaningful friendships with co-workers in the investment management community, through extended-family gatherings, and via her hobbies curling, yoga, shuffleboard, and walking.
Curling was the catalyst that brought Rose and Scotty together. Equally strong minded, Rose had found her perfect match. Rose and Scotty enjoyed summer cabin time at Grand Marais and post-retirement winter trips to Texas, Portugal, and British Columbia, where they continued to make close friends.
While the last year of her life was marked by the increasing debilitation of terminal cancer, Rose strove to maintain independence for the duration of her struggle.
A life lived on her own terms.
Enough gratitude cannot be expressed to the heroes in our health care system. Thank you to everyone at CancerCare, Health Sciences Centre Emergency, Victoria General Hospital Urgent Care and definitely not least Palliative Care (Home Care and St. Boniface General Hospital-8A). Rose's final days and eventual passing in hospital occurred with kind, caring faces of doctors, nurses, and aides nearby. Gerry and Nicole were blessed to be present as Rose passed away peacefully.
Rose's family kindly requests that her friends and relatives take a few minutes to honour her memory by visiting her tribute page at EthicalDeathCare.com. A photo-biography, as well as memories and stories published by those who knew her, are available there.
A celebration of Rose's life with close friends and family will be held in January on a date to be determined.
In lieu of flowers, please donate to Palliative Manitoba and/or CancerCare Manitoba.
