HAROLD BALLA
August 19, 1925 – December 12, 2022

It is with profound sadness that the family announces the passing of Harold Balla at the age of 97 on December 12, 2022 at the Holy Family Nursing Home.
Harold is survived by his son Greg (Sharon); granddaughter Nicole (David); grandsons, Eric (Branndy), Daniel (Ellen) and Ben; five great-grandchildren, Brayden, Alita, Bella, Kaelynn and Max and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Harold was predeceased, by his beloved wife Beverley; his parents, Nicolas and Anna; in-laws, Les and Laura Webb; brothers, Eusik and John and sisters, Mary, Kay, Olga and Annette; brother-in-law Raymond Webb and sister-in-law Anne Webb.
Harold was born on August 19, 1925 and spent his entire life in Winnipeg, Manitoba. As a youth, Harold excelled at athletics, particularly football and in 1945 suited up for our own Winnipeg Blue Bombers.
Harold and Beverley married on September 9, 1950; she was the love of his life. Harold and Bev enjoyed many trips to Hawaii, Las Vegas and to the west coast to visit family. They spent many enjoyable summers at the cottage at Victoria Beach.
Harold worked for CPR and Via Rail, retiring at the age of 58 with 41 years of service.
Harold was an avid golfer and lost golf ball retriever. He has a couple of holes in one to his credit. Later in life, Harold discovered a love for art and began painting and sketching, many of those sketches hanging in cottages at Victoria Beach.
The family would like to thank the Holy Family Home staff for the care and attention provided during his time there.
As per Harold's wishes, cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, December 21, 2022 at 1:00 p.m. at Cropo Funeral Chapel, 1442 Main Street with Rev. Don Schau officiating. A reception will be held immediately after the service with internment to follow at Glen Eden Cemetery, 4477 Main Street.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Atlantic-Garden City United Church, 725 Atlantic Avenue, Winnipeg, MB, R2W 0S6.

Condolences & Memories (8 entries)

  • My deepest sympathies to Greg and family. Your Dad was a wonderful human being and together with your Mom were a real beautiful couple… the dynamic duo! He was always willing to lend a helping hand and he actually got me a job with CP RAIL when I fell on hard times. God Bless you Harold …rest in peace…say Hi to Bev, Barb, Granny and the rest of the Balla clan. Gord - Posted by: Gord Diduck (longtime neighbor, friend and inlaw) on: Dec 20, 2022

  • Harold was the king of the one-liners. Our foursome for the VIA golf tournaments always included Harold. Sometimes I’d miss a shot because he had me laughing so hard (or at least that was my excuse!). Harold was one of a kind. I recently thought about him as I found a picture of Harold, Rod and me at Teulon Golf Club. I’ll miss you Harold. I hope you and Rod are shooting holes in one up there together. - Posted by: Christine Ward (Co-worker at VIA Rail) on: Dec 18, 2022

  • Our sincere sympathies to the Balla Family on the passing of their Dad, grandfather and great grandfather. Both Harold and Beverley were lovely people…. Kind, friendly and caring. Our years together as a church family at Atlantic Garden City United Church leaves us with warm memories. We are sad for your loss. Rest in peace Harold. • I knew Harold from the Winnipeg Blue Bomber Alumni. He was one of our "elder statesmen", and while he was able he was always keen to be involved in events and represent the early era of Blue Bomber football in Winnipeg. I will miss him dearly. My most heartfelt condolences to his family. Rest easy Harold. - Posted by: Cathy Garski (Friend (Blue Bomber Alumni)) on: Dec 17, 2022

  • I enjoyed being his golf partner at the VIA tournaments. He was such fun. - Posted by: Donna Cameron (VIA golf partner ) on: Dec 17, 2022

  • Harold was the master of the story and always had a joke to tell. - Posted by: Ken Dolynchuk (Family friend) on: Dec 17, 2022

  • Sincere condolences Greg and family. I remember Mr Balla from my years at VIA Rail. Always such a gentleman. I have two of his drawings which I treasure. RIP Mr Balla. - Posted by: Jeanette Havelock (Co-worker) on: Dec 17, 2022
