DAVID GEORGE RICHARDSON
December 11, 1940 - December 27, 2022
Maybe you've heard of
David George Richardson.
Very few of you saw David as a young boy playing hockey - endlessly, in borrowed goalie skates that were two sizes too big - right on the icy St. Boniface Street under the streetlight in front of his childhood home.
Years later, more of you might have read the headlines about 'fiery' Davey Richardson, a 5'8'' left-winger for the Winnipeg Rangers in the Winnipeg Junior Hockey League in the 1950's and 60's. Most of the stories about him shared the tenor of the following:
This was Dave Richardson's night at the Olympic rink. The Ranger winger reached his most glorious heights [hat trick] of the Manitoba Junior league season and then tarnished his fine display by participating in a wild last-minute brawl which earned him an eventual game misconduct penalty.
Hey. It was a different time.
Despite, or perhaps because of, his fiery nature, little Davey Richardson made it all the way to the Big Apple to play for another Ranger team. We know he always remembered his first NHL goal against Johnny Bower and the Leafs! Boo Leafs! (Sorry, it is obligatory to say this in Winnipeg.)
In the NHL (with the Blackhawks and Red Wings as well) he got the attention of the likes of Bobby Hull, Stan Mikita, and a certain Gordon Howe. Howe, described at the time by Stan Fischler as "the surgeon general of the Detroit Red Wings," apparently attempted to perform surgery upon the young Winnipegger.
Maybe, after Dave's professional skates were hung up, you bought a pair of your own from him (in the correct size) from MGM Sporting Goods on Portage Avenue where Dave was co-owner and manager.
Perhaps you remember a permed-up Dave Richardson as the color commentator on The Jet's on CKND or Hockey Night in Canada in the 1980's?
Hey. It was a different time.
Maybe you knew him as David, Davey, or Dave, but we knew him best as 'Dear Old Dad'. We remember family road trips to Grand forks and Fargo ("Holiday Inn sign!"). We remember magical Christmas mornings when the bottom of the tree could not contain Dad's generosity. We remember wonderful friendships and summer fun at Grand Beach. And we remember so much more.
We are Wom', Gordo, and Boomer (Lynne, Gord, and Murray), and we want to say goodbye, Dad. You were a warm, funny, and infinitely generous man, and you will be missed terribly.
Go wide, Davey. Go wide.

I just heard about Dave’s passing in December. I played with Dave in the SEMHL Hockey League in early 70s. He was our playing coach and we won the championship that year 70-71. He was a great coach and hockey player. He will be missed. Condolences to the family from all us that remember him in Winkler. He has passed but not forgotten. - Posted by: Randy Rietze (Hockey Team Mate) on: Apr 07, 2023

We wish to extend our deepest sympathy and caring thoughts to Dave’s family. My wife Cathy and I were very saddened to learn of Dave’s passing. I first remember Dave as a very spirited young catcher when I played pony league baseball against him. Years later I was a teammate of his for 3 years on the Winnipeg Rangers junior hockey team. He was one of our leaders and best players and was always able to upset the opposition both physically and vocally. In our final year he introduced me to a lovely girl who has now been my wife for over 57 years. Rest in peace Rookie. Geoff Ball - Posted by: Geoff Ball (Teammate and old friend) on: Jan 18, 2023

I was a good friend of Gord's in high school and remember Mr. Richardson as a kind and very, very funny person. I learned a lot about hockey from this family and recall the thrill of being at the Jets games when Mr. Richardson was up in the box doing the colour commentary. Gord, Murray, and Mrs. Richardson -- you are all in my thoughts. - Posted by: Meghan Nieman (Friend) on: Jan 09, 2023

So sorry to hear about Dave. My condolences. I grew up playing hockey in East Kildonan. Davey grew playing hockey in St. Boniface. We met playing hockey for the junior Winnipeg Rangers in the early 60's. When we met I was 16 and Dave was two years my senior. When I was called up by Denis Ball, I was a nervous wreck not knowing anyone on the team. Guess who was the guy who came and sat down and introduced himself. That was Dave . Doing the right thing to calm a rookies nerves. And for the next two years I was privileged to watch him weave his magic on the ice. If you wanted a team to win a championship this was the kind of guy you needed. A natural leader off and on the ice. Always the guy who would stand up in the room and say the right thing at the right time. Constantly wearing that ear-to-ear smile and joking with the guys. I know that he will be deeply missed by anyone who was lucky to know him - Posted by: tom trosky (hockey teammate) on: Jan 08, 2023

My deepest sympathy goes out to David's family. I knew Dave when we both worked on the third floor of the T. Eaton Company in the late fifties. Occasionally we would have a conversation and I learned how much he loved playing hockey. I am happy that he had that career in the NHL and other teams and I do remember seeing him play on TV and as a commentator for the Jets on CKND. Rest in Peace, David. - Posted by: Diane Miller (Aquaintance) on: Jan 05, 2023

My condolences to the Richardson family. Fiery was an understatement, I played a Wpg. Maroons charity game in Southern Mb. Davey was my centerman, the Broadstreet Bullies couldn't have scared another team like Davey did chirping and hacking and having the time of his life. What a competitor R.I.P. former Ranger - Posted by: ted irvine (friend) on: Jan 04, 2023

I was saddened to read of Dave’s passing in todays Free Press. It has been several years since I last saw Dave. I had the pleasure of working for him, Harry, Murray and Gord at MGM sporting goods for a number of years during which time we also attended a number of sporting goods conventions in Canada and the US. I was privileged to spend a number of years playing hockey with him and learning from him how to be a better player. We were roommates when we played and travelled with the Warroad Lakers when they won the Canadian intermediate hockey championship. Dave was a gentleman and always had time for a coffee with friends who would just drop by the store to visit. My condolences to the family on their loss. RIP Dave. - Posted by: Brian Dyck (Friend) on: Jan 04, 2023
