JACK DICK
May 24, 1929 - January 10, 2023

Dad fought a short battle with cancer with his usual feistiness and gusto, while in hospital he successfully escaped once and had a "nice" cup of coffee across the street. Dad lived his life that way, with independence, determination, and strength.
He was the only child of Justine Dick, He was born in Morden, MB where lived for two years and then to Gretna where he lived with his Aunt and Uncle. At age 11, he made friends with the conductor who allowed him to ride in the cargo car to travel back and forth to Winnipeg to visit his Mom until he moved to Winnipeg at age 15.
Dad wore many different "work hats" in his life, from picking and bagging potatoes, selling magazines, driving a gravel truck when the McArthur Dam was being constructed, working with the "E.J. Casey Shows" in the carnival where he and coworkers would sleep under the stars or under a truck if the weather was bad, to teaching school, grades 1-8 in Ashern, MB for a short stint. In Dad's final years of Business Admin at Red River he began working in the car industry, a profession he would remain in for over 40 years, Dad entered the automotive world as a salesman and worked his way up to GM and Vice President. Dad was a man with integrity, a mentor, and highly respected in the industry.
Dad met Mom in 1952 when he was the best man and Mom the maid of honour in a wedding party, they were married August 20, 1955, for 62 years.
Dad was pre-deceased by Mom and their two infants. Dad is survived by his children: Darlene (Joe), Larry (Tammi), Donna Jean (Dave), grandchildren: Derek (Krista), Wade (Jessie), Brent (Caroline), great-grandchildren: Chase, Brooks, and Bryson.
We have great memories of our families many camping trips to Detroit Lakes, our long road trip to Disneyland, and years of East Elmwood Community Club events - hockey tournaments for Larry would find Dad clearing ice rinks, and baton events for Darlene and Donna would include Dad building "floats" for the Manisphere parade. Dad also played hockey for E.E.C.C. old timers which he enjoyed very much. He was a huge sports enthusiast, whether it was baseball, curling, hockey or football. Dad and Mom enjoyed countless road trips to watch their grandsons play hockey in various Canadian and US cities, and to watch Joe when he played for the Bombers, Dad was very proud of his family.
Dad and mom loved Las Vegas, and in their retirement, they travelled to Tucson for several years making many new friends.
Dad couldn't have made us prouder in the way he cared for mom in her final years. After we lost Mom, Dad was at peace awaiting his life journey to end to join Mom, Dad visited Mom's resting place daily for five years, he missed her so.
Thank you to the staff at Oakview Place, specifically Ward One North, they were the most caring, thoughtful, and respectful individuals assisting Dad in his final days.
Dad…AKA "Gramps" or "JD"…you loved your family, have instilled much wisdom, shared life experiences and taught us well, thank you.

We will miss you and love you always.

Condolences & Memories (12 entries)

  • Thank you Uncle Jack for the regular phone calls and your supportive cheery conversations through the years. I will fondly remember wonderful memories of Aunty Joan’s and your efforts in hosting the most wonderful Christmas dinners filled with joy, laughter and wonderful food for all the family. I watched you Uncle Jack and how you cared for Auntie Joan with loving, respectful care every single day when she was ill. You will be sorely missed, but now you are watching over everyone from the Pearly Gates of Heaven. Condolences to Larry, Darlene and Donna Jean, spouses and children. May you be healed by the love you share in your hearts for your dad. - Posted by: Nancy Derksen (Neice) on: Jan 19, 2023

  • I first met Jack Dick in July 1957 when I received my first job in Winnipeg. It was at Community Chevrolet on Main Street where Jack was employed. He took several of us under his wing to help us get started in our careers. During the past 65 years our paths would cross, and Jack was always interested in how I was doing. When I started in business in the 60’s Jack became a customer. Jack has touched so many lives in a positive way and I am proud to take this moment to express my condolences to the entire family in celebration of Jack’s life. He was a good man. • I had the pleasure of meeting Jack for the first time when I was employed with General Motors many years ago in late 1959. At that time he was with Ed Vickar Community Chevrolet Oldsmobile as Business Management Manager. I got to know him well over the many years of our General Motors association. Jack was highly regarded as not only a good business man but a man of integrity and honesty. His word was his bond. I'm only sorry now that we lost connection in later years in our retirements. My sympathy to all the family. Mel Finlayson - Posted by: Mel FinlaysonFriend (Friend) on: Jan 15, 2023

  • On behalf of the Harris family, I would like to send our most sincere condolences to all the Dick family. I have fond memories of the house on Keenlyside and my friendship with Donna and I always felt welcome by Mr and Mrs Dick. I hope you find peace in knowing your mom and dad are now together again. Take care old friends, Lesley - Posted by: Lesley Rooney ( Harris) (Family friend ) on: Jan 14, 2023

  • Jack and Joan....what a couple! We met while Joan and I worked together @ BMO for many years. So many fond memories of our good times together as a group. Jack had such a wonderful sense of humour. When Wayne and I decided to go south for the winters, Jack and Joan were our mentors.....they told us how to travel by packing light without leaving behind any real necessities....a real art! With their help we found the best accommodations and had many great visits with them. When they changed their southern home from Phoenix to Tuscon we would always take a trip to meet up with them. Our sincere condolences to the family....they will both live on in our many fond memories of them. Donna and Wayne - Posted by: Wayne and Donna Purvis (friends) on: Jan 14, 2023

  • I am proud to tell I have had the pleasure and enjoyment of his friendship for over sixty years. He was a joy to spend time with as he always had a positive outlook and a warm smile. The world is a sadder place by his passing. A sad farewell my friend. - Posted by: nick miller (friend) on: Jan 14, 2023

  • I met Jack when he worked for Jim Gauthier as I was Jim’s lawyer at the time. I later got to know Joe and Darlene. A wonderful family and Jack was a real gentleman and a pleasure to work with. My sincere condolences to all this family with a wish to remember all the great times and his real sense of humour. • My husband and I have been friends with Mr Dick’s son, Larry for 40 years. We both had the pleasure to meet Mr Dick, and his wife, at their home, either having drinks by their pool, or in their house enjoying some fun games in there basement. He was a fun out going man, and it sure didn’t take long to figure out where Larry’s sense of humour came from. Larry and Tammi, we are so very sorry for you and the rest of your family for your loss. He is now with your mom, who we know he loved very much. • New Jack years ago when he worked at Wpg. Arena. A wonderful man. - Posted by: Richard Johnston (Friend from long ago.) on: Jan 13, 2023

  • My sincere condolences to Joe and Darlene and the rest of Jack’s family. I met a Jack when he managed Terry Balkan Chevrolet and I did some promotions for them. He was always smiling. - Posted by: Jocelyn Greenwood (Acquaintance ) on: Jan 13, 2023
