RICHARD JAMES HUGHES
August 28, 1981 - January 14, 2023

It is with heartfelt sadness that the family announces the tragic passing of Richard James Hughes. Rick died peacefully with his family at his side on January 14, 2023.
Rick is survived by the mother of his children, Mel, and their children, Sydney and Madeline; father Alfred and stepmother Keren; stepfather Kris; brother Allan (Lisa), niece Kaylen (Cole), and great-nephew Maverick; sister Jessica (Ian) and niece Tabitha; step-brother Jason and family; grandparents Jim and Lenore Byrne, and Phyllis Taylor; uncles and aunts Bill (Kim), Phil (Christina), Debbie (Rolly), Donna (Ed), George, Tim, Sue (Ted), Larry, Marlene, Dawn and Monica; cousins, Jeremy (Naomi), Devan, Alida (Trevor), Claire, Jackie, and Taigan (Kevin), and many extended family and friends. Rick was predeceased by his mother Ellen; grandparents, Harold and Marjorie Hughes, George and Thora Walsh, and John Taylor.
Rick found the ultimate joy in his children, and loved spending time with them. Rick was very charismatic, and had a wonderful laugh and infectious smile - it was hard not to be in a good mood in his presence. He was a kind, caring, and sensitive person, and was someone you could always turn to. Rick had a lifelong passion for music, and would be the first to sing along, ranging from classic rock to rap. Rick loved nature, and loved swimming, especially with his children. They liked spending time together at the lake, going for ice cream, bike rides, and walks. Rick was always a dedicated worker, and he excelled at all the jobs he tried - from Sheet Metal work to most recently working with New Directions, with a passion and genuine interest in helping others, and understanding them. Rick lived life to the fullest, he was loved and adored by all. He will be deeply missed.

Rick, we love you and
hope you have found peace.

In lieu of flowers, we would encourage you to make a donation to New Directions, Endowment Fund in memory of Richard J. Hughes.
A Memorial Service will take place on Saturday January 21, 2023 at 10:00 a.m. at Transcona Memorial United Church, 209 Yale Avenue West, Winnipeg, Manitoba.

  • Rick was very dedicated in his role as a community resource worker and to the individuals that he supported. I personally witnessed some incredible connections and progress between Rick and some of our most challenging to reach clients. I know that he really enjoyed the work that he did. I really enjoyed time spent with Rick whether it be in conversations regarding work or just talking. - Posted by: Jeff ( Co worker and friend) on: Jan 21, 2023

  • I want to say I am so sorry for your loss. I used to hang out with Allan and met his amazing family. The last time I saw Rick was when we were riding are BMX bikes to Safeway to buy matches or eggs to burn or egg something. Rick was always voted to buy the matches or eggs. Nobody would suspect his devilish charm and his innocent looking face. He was a nice funny lil dude back then. I am sorry and shocked to hear this tragic news. - Posted by: Chris Roznowsky (Friend) on: Jan 21, 2023

  • My most heartfelt condolences to Alan, Jessica & all of Ricks family & friends! I was very young when I first met Ricky but I do have memories of us when we all lived together on McMeans.❤️ & also the time we went to the lake & my dad forgot the key so he pushed me through the cabin window to unlock the door for them lol. I wish I would have had the chance in adulthood to have reconnected with Ricky myself, but my brother Clayton spoke of Ricky & told me how they connected in most recent years & how he was always so helpful & caring to him!! Hearing of his passing has brought sadness to my heart, my thoughts, prayers & love are with you & your family during this most difficult time! 🌹 Sending my love - Posted by: Taylor Fraser ((Guys Fraser’s daughter) ) on: Jan 20, 2023

When we all went to the lake and you and I took the peddle boat out fishing, you landed a small walleye and it popped off the hook in the boat and bit down on your toe lol we were just howling laughing so hard. Another memory I'll never forget is when our parents bought the house on mcmeans and built the big deck outback just recently finished and having a get together.
