JOSEPH WILLIAM MCEVOY
September 21, 1939 – January 6, 2023

On January 6, 2023 Joe passed away peacefully with his family at his side.
Left to cherish his memory are his first wife, Glynis, his brother, Keith (Janet), his daughter, Fleur (Gale), his second wife, Marian, and his beloved granddaughter, Kate. Joe was preceded in passing by his son, Gareth, who died in 2017. He will be missed by many family members living in England.
Joe was born and raised in Liverpool, England. He was educated at Liverpool Collegiate and the University of Natal in South Africa, in the field of quantity surveying.
In 1969, Joe moved from England to South Africa with his family. He worked for an international company of engineers, architects, and quantity surveyors. In 1972, he moved from South Africa to Rhodesia, now known as Zimbabwe. In 1975, Joe moved to Canada, working with several partners before setting up his own business in 1986, J.W. McEvoy & Assoc. He worked on many projects in Winnipeg, rural Manitoba and as far north as Resolute Bay, NU. After a long and successful career, Joe retired at the age of 70.
Throughout his life, Joe was active. He played many sports, including soccer, rugby, cricket, baseball, and later, squash. He was a long-time member of the Winnipeg Squash Racquet Club, and chairman of their building committee. Joe also coached junior soccer in Winnipeg.
He believed in philanthropy and regularly donated money to promote the welfare of others, both people and animals. He was an incredibly kind man to those in less fortunate situations. Joe had a love for nature and was interested in weather and climate issues.
Joe was a great dad to his children, Gareth, and Fleur. He was always there when he was needed. He was a wonderful grandfather to Kate, who brought much joy and laughter into his life. He will be sadly missed by us all.
Joe did not want to have a funeral service. In lieu of funeral services, a donation may be made in Joe's memory to any animal welfare organization.

  • In my career as an architect, I can honestly confirm that Joe was the very best QS/Estimator I have ever worked with on a professional basis. As well he was very patient with design types, and a genuine gentleman in every possible way. To Marian and family, I give you my sincere sympathies on Joe's passing.....he was a person of absolute integrity with a great sense of humour as well ! • Sorry to learn of Joe's passing. I remember some good competitive squash games down at the club and interesting conversations afterward. He was a good friend but we lost touch over the years as I retired and played during the day and he was still working and playing later. For many years we celebrated our birthdays together as he was one day younger than me. RIP Joe. Condolences to the family. - Posted by: Dennis Wilson (friend) on: Jan 21, 2023
