BOB KUSSY
February 13, 1959 January 2, 2023
Bob Kussy passed away suddenly on Tuesday, January 3, 2023.
Born in Winnipeg to Ben and Lil Kussy, he is survived by his loving wife of 25 years, Goota Ashoona, sons, Joe and Sam Ashoona; grandchildren, Kaize, Klugaq and Ujarak; brothers, Steve (Lorri) and Jimmy; nephews, Andrew, Daniel and Joachim Kussy; cousins: Ruslana and Borys Wrzesnewskyj; Irka, Zenon and Myron Dyczok; Olena and Oleh Hankivsky; aunts, Roma and Zorianna, numerous relatives in his extended family, and countless friends and people whose lives he touched.
During his university days and 20s, Bob was the epicenter of a wide circle of friends. He loved to dance and party, yet he was also drawn to nature, camping, fishing, and wilderness adventures. Soon wanderlust drove him to Europe, Morocco, Nepal and India. Travelling alone or with friends, he had a special way of connecting with people he encountered, drawing them into his orbit of lifelong friends. Back home, his store, Himalayan Imports, featured clothing, jewelry, rugs and artifacts bought in the markets of Marrakesh, Kathmandu and other stops on his global travels.
Next stop was Yellowknife, where he worked with troubled youth as an adolescent addiction and solvent abuse counsellor, and as an art teacher to inmates in prison. It was in Yellowknife that Bob found his soulmate, Goota Ashoona, a third generation Inuit artist of the Ashoona family of Cape Dorset. Together they built their family life centered on art and their two sons, Joe and Sam. They established Ashoona Studios, building relationships with collectors and galleries across Canada. As a volunteer, Bob founded the first outdoor soccer tournament for children in the Arctic and served as Circumpolar Arts Festival Coordinator.
From Yellowknife, the family moved to Sandspit, in Haida Gwaii, BC. With access to a large supply of whalebone, Goota and Bob's work flourished. Moving to Manitoba brought Bob back to the city of his childhood and youth. Their life and creative work are the subject of two videos that reveal artists' journey to create art, get it sold and exhibited: the CBC documentary "Carved in Stone", and the interview for the Yellowknife International Film Festival.
Bob's enthusiasm, kindness and generosity was boundless. Over the years, Bob and Goota donated art pieces to support cultural and social fundraising activities of organizations like WAG, CNIB, United Way and many local community projects and charities. Most recently, Bob and Goota donated over 25 works to raise funds for children and mothers affected by the Russian war in Ukraine, thus honouring Bob's family's refugee flight from Ukraine ahead of advancing Soviet troops almost 80 years ago.
Always generous with his time, knowledge, and talent, Bobby carved his way into many hearts. He was quick to laugh and share his infectious smile with many.
"My friends seem to tolerate my eccentricities... and the art community, however wide, seems to recognize something of value in what I do... I seem to be fortunate to be able to work with family in an art studio, and family experience and history have come to play a prominent role with respect to the man I have become."

I knew Bob as a teenager when we both played soccer together at Sir John Franklin CC. I always knew that Bobby, as we called him was not going to work behind a desk in a 9-5 job. He had many ideas about his future none of which involved working for others. A free spirit at 14 years of age and someone who followed his dreams as an adult. Enjoyed the championships won with him in 1973 and 1975 especially our trip to play in Scotland. I wish we had connected more frequently as adults but when we did cross paths he would regale me at some length with tales of his latest adventures. My condolences to the Kussy family. Bobby and I grew up in school and sports together in the 70’s. We were hockey and soccer teammates for most of our playing careers. Jimmy joined us in later years. But after high school, life takes you on different paths and we loose touch with people. Rest in Peace Bobby. - Posted by: Dale Lelonde (Old friend from another time) on: Feb 07, 2023

My deepest condolences to Goota and family on the passing of Bob, friend and fine gentleman, who carved his unique path in life. George, my late husband and I met Goota and Bob in Yellowknife in 2002. Bob was instrumental in helping me establish an online Inuit Art Gallery by advising of the best carvers from whom to purchase. Naturally, among these artists were Bob and Goota and we often schmoozed in their studio, a hub of fascinating activity. Bob was always jovial, generous with his time and genuinely engaged in helping others. Also, noteworthy is how Bob was instrumental in promoting and furthering the careers many Inuit artists, including Goota's parents Kiugak and Sorosilutu Ashoona. Bob's passion kept the spotlight on Inuit art as solo artist, in collaboration with Goota and in maintaining world attention on Inuit art. This has proven invaluable to Inuit artists and their communities and will resonate for generations to come. We will miss Bob's postitve energy, endless optimism and creative spirit. My condolences to Bob’s family and friends on his sudden passing. Bob and I met as children through the sports of hockey and soccer and as regular participants at the Crescentwood Community Club. Later, we saw each other on the university campus, at Fuse shows and when he operated Himalayan Imports before he left Winnipeg. Bob was always irrepressibly cheerful and fun to be around. I last saw him at his father Ben’s funeral and he was the same as ever. - Posted by: Steve Vincent (Old Friend) on: Jan 29, 2023

I only met Bob a couple of times at the WAG and he was always full of life and enthusiasm. This is a terrible loss to the artist community and the community of Winnipeg, but more importantly his family must be devastated. My heart goes out to his wife and children. He has left quite the legacy and will be remembered. - Posted by: Tim Durnin-Richards (Aquiantance) on: Jan 23, 2023

My sincere condolences to his family on the loss of this true talent and all-around nice guy. My memories of Bobby, Jimmy & Steve go back to the 'Big house on Jessie Ave.'. There, we would all get a kick out of the occasions when 'Baba' would come downstairs and speak Ukrainian to us all. It was also where his father Ben was the 'King of Crescentwood' and Mrs. Kussy kept it all in check! There was a pigeon coop in the backyard and a great group of kids growing up in a great neighbourhood. 'Vichnaya Pamyat Bob' - Posted by: Victor Danyliuk (Friend) on: Jan 21, 2023
