BRIGITTA RAABE
It is with heavy hearts that the family announce the passing of their dear mother Brigitta on January 30, 2023 at the Middlechurch Home of Winnipeg surrounded by her family.
She was predeceased by her two brothers - Gerhard (who never returned home from the war), and Walter, as well as her husband Kurt who passed away in 1996 just one month short of their 40th wedding anniversary.
She leaves to mourn her four children, Thomas, Michael (Shelley), Norbert (Kathy) and Monica, as well as her five grandchildren, Chelsea, Chase, Nicole, Taryn and Ryan.
Mom was born in Obrawalde, Germany on April 5, 1929. After finishing school, she worked a number of jobs, most notably as a clinical office assistant for a medical practice which she enjoyed immensely. After the war was over, she met her future husband who then emigrated to Canada in 1955 to find work as a carpenter, and once he had secured employment, he asked her to come to Canada as well, arriving by ship later that year. They married in 1956 with a small wedding service attended by a few close friends. They soon started a family and became entrenched in the Canadian culture, but never forgetting their roots.
Dad worked very hard to provide for his family with little income and Mom also worked outside the home for a while to provide a good life for her children.
Her greatest joy in life was her children and grandchildren, and the many close friends she made in the Kolping Society of Winnipeg at St. Joseph's Roman Catholic Church which she cherished until the end. She was a good cook and an even better baker, and hardly a Sunday went by without a fancy torte or a German apple cake or cheesecake when entertaining close friends at home.
Mom and Dad took a number of trips back to Germany later in life to visit family and friends, and enjoyed their company when they came to visit in Canada.
The family thanks all the staff at Concordia Village Assisted Living, and the Middlechurch Home of Winnipeg for their care and compassion in the last years of her life.
A celebration of Brigitta's life will take place on Thursday, February 9, 2023 with interment at 1:30 p.m. (NE corner of the cemetery) at Glen Eden Memorial Gardens, 4477 Main St., West St. Paul, MB. This will be followed by a funeral service and luncheon at the Funeral Centre on site.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the charity of your choice.
We love you mom; may you
rest in peace and eternal life be yours.

Dear Tom, Michael, Norbert, Monica and family, We offer our sincere condolences at the death of your mother and grandmother. We remember your mom as the warm, loving and good natured soul that she was. Her spontaneous laughing outbursts and good humour cheered us all. As parishioners at St. Joseph's Roman Catholic Church we prayed and worshiped together in Communion as a church family. We remember family gatherings on Sunday afternoons for Kaffee and Kuchen or Abendbrot, and Saturday morning German school with Monica. Our family's house was built with the hands of your father, Kurt. We grieve with you at the loss of your beloved mother. "Wir sind nur Gast auf Erden und wandern ohne Ruh mit mancherlei Beschwerden der ewigen Heimat zu." Eternal rest grant unto her, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon her! May she rest in peace. With love from Edgar Dirk, Alexandra Christie, Christina Faitakis and families - Posted by: Edgar Dirk and family (Family friends) on: Feb 10, 2023

A few days ago I received news that my children's grandmother passed away. Brigitte was my mother-in-law for almost 2 decades and while our relationship was challenging at times it was very sad news. She played a large role in my life and my children's lives. Our family dynamic was often complicated but I wanted to say a few words since this day is about offering my condolences and support to my children who deeply loved Oma unconditionally. Chelsea was only 3 when her Opa died and Oma was my kids only grandparent left. An important bond that would influence their entire lives growing up, something for which I will be forever grateful. Oma wasn't so good at the grandma thing at the start but soon became an extra layer of support for the kids especially during tough times. She became a source of knowledge that eventually came from a place of unconditional love and support. She lit up when her grandchildren came into a room and she had so many stories and experiences from her own life to share. She eagerly waited every holiday for their arrival and all her grandchildren were a source of joy for her. As many of you know Brigitte had a very strong faith and so she is now with her husband Kurt and her grandson Mason who will surely have their arms around her. She will live on in her children and grandchildren who will continue to celebrate her life in all that they do. Rest in Peace Brigitte Melody Raabe - Posted by: Melody Raabe (Friend) on: Feb 09, 2023

We met Brigitte for the first time in our West St. Paul stomping grounds, when your dear daughter Monica came into our lives when she was just 11 years old. We first fell in loves with this adorable little girl but quickly had the chance to meet Brigitte and Kurt and the boys. Tom, Mike, Nobs, and our dear Monica, we send you our love and our heartfelt condolences. You were all very special to your Mom. To the Raabe Family, I offer my sincere condolences on the passing of your dear mother. I remember her quite well from our early childhood years on Teakwood Ave, bellowing for the boys to come in for supper. Grand lady indeed who was part of our “culture” of the old neighborhood. - Posted by: Neil Hutsel (Family friend) on: Feb 03, 2023
