TRAVIS DUNN
Travis G. Dunn passed away unexpectedly on February 1, 2023 at age 65.
He was born on April 23, 1957 to Austin and Betty (Platte) Dunn in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. He graduated from Transcona Collegiate High School, and the University of North Dakota. Travis especially loved summers at the cottage at Ottermere. Hockey was a big part of his life. He was a defenseman on the UND Hockey team, winning a national championship in 1980. After the season, he was drafted by the St. Louis Blues, and signed a professional contract with the Salt Lake Golden Eagles. He returned to Grand Forks to finish his degree, and became part of the WDAZ TV hockey broadcasts with Pat Sweeney, providing color commentary for 12 seasons. He married Rose Brunsvold in Fargo in 1988. They had two children, Gary (Mindy Schwarz) and Serena (Zac Soma). The family moved from Grand Forks to Moorhead, MN in 1996, and he pursued a sales career first in advertising sales at KTHI TV and for the past 21 years he sold medical supplies for Convatec. Hockey was a big part of his life, starting with a rink right behind his house in Transcona. He continued to enjoy playing, watching and coaching the game for his entire life. He remained an ardent supporter of UND hockey, and in recent years hosted two hockey radio shows on KFGO and 740 the Fan. This season he had returned to the broadcast booth, providing color commentary for UND's home game radio broadcasts. He also loved time at the lake with his family, and on the golf course with his friends.
In addition to his wife and children, he is survived by his brothers, Blake (Barbara) and Garnet (Pam), Winnipeg, brother and sister-in-law Tom and Lisa Staiger, Moorhead, four nieces and two great-nephews. He was preceded in death by his brother Gary, parents, grandparents, uncles, and aunt Margaret Wolff.
Travis was a kind and thoughtful man who touched many lives. He will be dearly missed by his family, his many friends, former hockey teammates, golf buddies and colleagues.
Visitation will take place at First Lutheran Church in Fargo on Thursday, February 16, 2023 at 5:00 p.m., with a prayer service and time of sharing at 7:00 p.m. A Celebration of Life will be held on Friday, February 17, 2023 at First Lutheran Church at 2:00 p.m., with visitation at the church one hour before the service. Travis maintained our long distance friendship for many, many years as a close relationship became difficult because of our physical distance apart. But always appreciated his contact going back to earlier days as close neighbours in Winnipeg. I was a good friend of his brother Gary, whose name has carried on through Travis' own son. Travis always brought back memories of a younger past, and the good times associated with it! A loyal brother and friend, he was always caring, kind, and interested in you. Our sincere condolences to Rose, Gary and Serena in their sudden loss. And I must also mention his brothers Blake and Garnet and their families as well. Am having a hard time accepting the fact that he is gone! - Posted by: Jack and Linda Bernhardt (Lifelong Friends) on: Feb 14, 2023

So saddened to hear of the passing of Travis. Great memories of putting our skates on at Big Travis parents house and going across the lane to play at Pirates. Many happy times on the Transcona Golf Course with Trav always finding a better ball in the bush lol. My condolences to the family. R.I.P. Big Trav. Blake,Garnet and Families, Please accept my sincerest condolences on Travis' Passing. I had the privilege of meeting and interacting with Travis while he taught in Transcona/Springfield School Division on a regular basis. Travis and I would sit in the Staff Room at lunch break when Travis was teaching at John W. Gunn Junior High..which was often.. . He and I would compare Athletic Programs of North Dakota/Minnesota and Manitoba. Obviously,Hockey was the forefront of the conversation as the other staff members listened with interest and amazement. i.e. distinct differences. Staff and students always looked forward to having Travis' presence and sense of humor. Although I have never met Travis' Wife and Family, my offer of condolences and sympathy go out to you as well. We played many ball hockey games at the Pirates Community Club with Travis who lived right across the back lane. Although Travis was older than us he always had time to make sure we were allowed to participate. He liked to tell us stories of the teams he played on and always had a helpful tip on how we can improve our game. Later in life I had the pleasure of working with him in the summer at Southdale Lawn Service where he was our manager. Along with Derrick Todurok we had many laughs together and shared many hockey stories. He had the most interesting stories of his time at UND and in St Louis. Travis was a truly a nice guy and always had time to talk whenever I would see him back in Transcona in the summers from UND. It was quite ironic we ended up working together but it was like old times at the rink. It is very sad to see him pass away so young. My condolences to his family! - Posted by: Keith Merkel (Ball hockey Friend from the Pirates Community Club and Transcona) on: Feb 11, 2023

I was deeply saddened to hear of “Trav’s” passing. Trav and I were childhood friends from grade 1 to 12. Trav’s hockey skills declared themselves quite early in life and he developed a fearsome slap shot that pretty much cleared the front of the net. We played hockey on opposite teams and I remember when we played against each other I would always try to make him laugh to slow him down and it worked from time to time. He was a kind soul and had an infectious laugh that I still remember to this day. God bless you Trav - Posted by: Jim Grapentine (Friend ) on: Feb 11, 2023

Lauren and I wish to extend our deepest sympathies to Rose, Gary, Serena and family. Travis and I met in elementary school and I remember playing pick up hockey games with him. He was fast! Golfing at the Transcona G C was always an adventure. Travis made sure we focused on fun and not our score. We both have wonderful memories of Travis being at our wedding and having his mom sing at the ceremony. Travis was such a kind and caring guy. We were privileged to know him. - Posted by: Joe Laxdal (Friend) on: Feb 11, 2023
