DAVID GUY SMETHURST

It is with deep sadness that I share the sudden passing of my much-loved brother David.
David leaves behind our father Robert Guy and his wife, of Cobble Hill, BC, myself Linda Anne Cottrell, and nephews Adam Guy and Cameron Allan, of North Vancouver, BC. He is also survived by many special cousins and dear friends.
David's career as a Flight Service Specialist, with Transport Canada and NAV Canada brought together many of his favorite things: aviation, travel and friendships. He retired from NAV Canada in January 2018 after 30 years of loyal service. In recent years, David enjoyed a few of his much-anticipated trips. He took up gardening and spent an incredible amount of time documenting our family history. A proud Winnipegger, David was a patron of the city's Arts and Sports.
He will forever be remembered for his great love of family, friends, all things aviation and a world he loved to explore.
A Celebration of Remembrance was held on Wednesday, February 15, 2023 at Wojcik's Chapel of Memories at 1020 Main Steet, Winnipeg, Manitoba.
If family and friends so desire, donations may be made in David's memory to the Royal Manitoba Theatre Centre, 174 Market Avenue, Winnipeg, MB R3B 0P8 or online at royalmtc.ca, or The Welcome Centre at The Ukrainian National Federation, 935 Main Street, Winnipeg, MB R2W 3P2 or online at unfcanada.ca.

Condolences & Memories (9 entries)

  • Im so shocked to read this. I have been emailing Dave for the last few weeks. I meet Dave a few years ago in Palm Springs and we became great friends and emailed to catch up on news every month. I was due to fly out to Palm Springs in August and spend some time with him after not being able to go for the last few years. Very sad. Will miss you. • My condolences to Dave’s family and other friends, my heart broke when I heard the sadness news. I met Dave in 2012 when I started working with him Winnipeg. I always enjoyed working with Dave, he was smart, personable and always knew how to carry on a conversation. I’m going to miss him. - Posted by: Scott Nordal (Friend / Coworker) on: Feb 18, 2023

  • So sorry to hear about David. I had the pleasure of working with him at the Winnipeg FIC from 2002 - 2007. He was a very kind person and I am happy to have know him. Sincere condolences. Joe - Posted by: Joe Burkholder (Colleague at NavCanada) on: Feb 16, 2023

  • Linda and family, Rob and I offer our sincere sympathy on the untimely passing of Dave. Growing up on Amundsen Bay I have known you both for many years. Dave and I were in the same grade through out school, and were blessed to keep in touch afterward. Although we did not see each other frequently, it seemed that when we got together we could always pick up where we left off. Unfortunately last summer Dave was not able to make our annual summer get together, as he had a trip planned to Palm Springs at the same time. We missed him. “How lucky I am to have something that makes saying goodbye so hard.” ~ A.A. Milne Ardith (Grose) and Rob Hammerling - Posted by: Ardith and Rob (Friends) on: Feb 15, 2023

  • To David's family; my sincere sympathy on the passing of David, he will be missed very much by myself along with all of his other friends and neighbours at Sterling Point. David loved Sterling Point and donated so much of his free time to make sure everything run as smoothly as possible, he did an outstanding job. I will remember David for his engaging conversations, our Christmas Light project and his helping hand when-ever we needed him. Rest in Peace David, and thanks for all that you did, Kenda - Posted by: Kenda Ibbetson (Friend and Neighbor) on: Feb 14, 2023

  • Linda and family. I am so sorry to hear of David’s passing. I have fond memories of you two when you were students at Lincoln. My thoughts are with you. Lorne Lisik - Posted by: Lorne Lisik (Former teacher) on: Feb 14, 2023

  • No cribbage tournament will be the same, without you. We will cherish the times we spent with you, esp. your favourite Key Lime Pie over coffee and a good chat. - Posted by: Robert and Valerie (Friend ) on: Feb 14, 2023

  • Seems that everything can change in an instant, and yet nothing changes. David, we will cherish the time we had with you, you will not be forgotten, nor will you be forgiven for all the trivia contests you won over the years. - Posted by: Terry Newton (Cousin) on: Feb 14, 2023

  • There are no words to express shock & sadness of his passing. Since his retirement gardening became his passion & it won’t be the same not seeing him early morning in flower bed’s with his garbage can, gloves & shears. He was so proud of how well flowers did last year & had plans for the coming year in front & back of his condo. He took every job personally & with great passion. It has been a brutal couple of years. Rest in Peace, David. You’ll be missed.💕😢 - Posted by: Beverley Russell (Friend & Neighbour) on: Feb 14, 2023
