DONALD PHILIP SALTIS
June 2, 1953 – January 30, 2023

Born on Queen Elizabeth's coronation on June 2, 1953, Don Saltis came into this world with a silver spoon gifted by the then Governor General, Vincent Massey. Don grew up on Dubuc Street in St. Boniface with his parents, Ivan and Rose, and his four sisters, Dona, Vivian, Julline, and Patricia. He attended Holy Cross School, King George School, Queen Elizabeth School, and Nelson McIntyre Collegiate. Don studied at the University of Manitoba, obtaining his Bachelor of Science degree in 1977. He later obtained his Certified Management Accounting designation in 1983. After working in various jobs, Don embarked on a 30-year career in public service, working in several departments in the Government of Manitoba, eventually retiring in 2015 as Executive Financial Officer in the Department of Justice. He will be sorely missed by his family, friends, and former colleagues.
Don met the love of his life, Rachel Ouimet, in 1972, after being introduced by a mutual friend. They would marry in 1977 and forge a life together. Their son, Zachary, was born in 1983, while their daughter, Margo, would follow in 1986. Don worked very hard to provide his children the best life possible, just like his parents did before him. He was very proud of his children and embraced his daughter-in-law, Chelsa, and step-grandson, Mayson, as his own. Don had a strong sense of duty toward his family, and for that, we are forever grateful to him.
Don's life was synonymous with gardening, music, travel, and the Montreal Canadiens. He also loved the family's site at Lilac Resort, where he spent his summers since 1987.
The family would like to express its sincerest gratitude to the wonderful staff at Hospital La Joya Marina in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico for the unparalleled care, compassion, and dignity given to Don and his family. Gratitude is also expressed to the superb staff at Celis Funeral Home and Villas Vallarta in that same city.
A Celebration of Life in honour of Don will take place in the Promenade Ballroom at the Norwood Hotel (112 Marion Street) on Saturday, March 4, 2023, at 2:00 p.m. Formal service to begin at 2:30 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada.

We'll meet again,
Don't know where, don't know when
But I know we'll meet again
some sunny day.

Condolences & Memories (3 entries)

  • I had the privilege of working with Don in the late ‘70s at the Deposit Guarantee Corporation. He was so even in his approach to work and life. Nothing phased him. I was sure he would be very successful. And he was. In work and life. I remember picking him up at their apartment off Des Meurons and meeting Rachel. He was so proud of her. I remember him telling me Rachel brought a 60’s record of The Bee Gees to her class to see if they recognized them (they were disco now). I remember meeting him at Falcon Lake in the 90’s and the first thing he said was I have to meet Rachel. I remember many other things but the theme is the love he had for Rachel and family. I always hoped we would cross paths again. Saddened to hear of his passing. My deepest condolences - Posted by: Don Loewen (Worked together ) on: Feb 18, 2023

  • Don was fun to be around during our summers at Lilac resort. He loved early morning bike rides and talks. We also enjoyed hrs together with Rachelle and Don at the bar. The news of Don was so shocking! He will be greatly missed. God speed Sincerely, Calla and Don Brown - Posted by: Don and Calla Brown (friends) on: Feb 18, 2023

  • My deepest condolences to Don's family on his passing. I would like to share a quote with Don's family. Don has not died, but gone away to a better place, free of pain and suffering. We will see him again someday. Rest in Peace Don. You are loved and will be missed. - Posted by: Patricia Homenick (Attended school with Don and his sister Dona) on: Feb 18, 2023
