STEPHEN WILLIAM SKRYBALO
1933 – 2023

It is with profound sadness that our family announces the sudden passing of Stephen Skrybalo on January 10,2023 at St. Boniface Hospital, just eight days shy of his 90th birthday. Steve was born on January 18, 1933 to Peter and Annie Skrybalo.
Left to mourn his passing is his wife, Olga, of 62 years. Also mourning are his children and their families: daughter Sharon (Rob) and their daughters, Kristen (Jordan) with great-grandchildren, Olivia and James, Melissa (Lyndon) and Lauren; son Gary (Donna) and his children, Ronelle and Tyson.
Steve grew up in the North End and did very well in school, particularly math. He was always good with numbers. He had to help the family out at a young age due to a serious work injury to his dad. He started his work career at 18 with CN Railway which lasted 39 years at which time he proudly retired at 57. He started his career as a clerk and worked his way up into sales which he enjoyed and excelled at, making many good friends.
He met the love of his life Olga in 1955 and they dated for five years, marrying in 1960. They had two children then moved to their home on Roberta Avenue where he and Olga lived for 55 years. They enjoyed many memorable family vacations including camping, Lake of the Woods, Disneyland and Disney World.
Steve and Olga enjoyed their many groups of friends including lake friends, hockey parents, Rossmere Golf and Country Club and CN retirees. They also enjoyed travelling to Mazatlan, Las Vegas and the Shooting Star Casino to name a few of their favourites.
He joined Rossmere and was a proud member for many years, volunteering to help at events and golfing with his golf group who he had so much fun with. In retirement he also enjoyed his wood working, making toys and other things for his grandchildren as well as selling at craft shows which he did for several years.
Through it all he was a very proud husband, dad and grandfather who was always there to help out or provide advice. He particularly took great pride in his grandkids and all their sports, activities and school achievements. Family get-togethers always saw him laughing at something the grandkids did or said.
As per his wishes, there will not be a service. Cremation has taken place.

Condolences & Memories (7 entries)

  • I’m very broken hearted to hear of Stephen’s passing. I worked at RR1 where he lived for many years (left in Oct 2022 when I moved to Calgary). I got to know him and his wife Olga very well. Stephen was always so happy, making sure Olga was taken care of, always partaking in activities and dances (even if he couldn’t dance, he was tapping toes in his wheelchair). I got to know his kids Sharon and Gary well too and my deepest condolences to you all along with sweet Olga. I’ve got a lovely picture of Stephen and I at my going away party that I will cherish always. Love and hugs to you all. - Posted by: Rene Kelly (Worked at River Ridge 1 where he lived ) on: Mar 06, 2023

  • Steve was my golf friend at Rossmere Country Club for over forty years. He was also one of the original group for the "Boys last fling at summer golf weekend" at Falcon Lake for many years. My sincere condolences to the family. - Posted by: Larry Grant (Friend) on: Feb 20, 2023

  • Sharon and Rob - I am so very sorry for your loss. All my grandchildren had "name trains" hand crafted by Steve which makes him an integral part of my family history. He will be missed. Joan - Posted by: Joan Smith (Friend) on: Feb 20, 2023

  • Steve was predeceased his sister June (nee Skrybalo) on 18th, 2019 where Steve and other close family members and friends were at mom's side when she passed. Although Steve and June's relation was strained for many years, they made amends later in life. - Posted by: Doug Miller (Nephew) on: Feb 20, 2023

  • My deepest sympathies to Olga, Sharon, Gary and their families. Steve was a great man and together with Olga, were close valued friends of my parents. He was like a wise uncle to me often asking the perfect wise non confrontational question causing me to reconsider something I had done or was about to do. I valued his advice. I imagine him now catching up with my parents and sharing a few laughs. May he rest in peace. Brian and Yvonne Anderson - Posted by: Brian Anderson (friend) on: Feb 18, 2023

  • Steve and Olga were always so good to Ralph and June and esp. Ralph after June died. They enjoyed many, many years of friendship. I have lots of happy memories of times at the lake and I still have a wooden car made by Steve years ago. My condolences to all the family, Jan - Posted by: Janice Anderson (Friend) on: Feb 18, 2023
