HARTMUT (HART) STREU
June 15, 1941 - February 8, 2023
On February 8, 2023, with Heather at his side, Hart moved on to create new friendships in the afterlife.
Hart is survived by his wife Heather, sons, Craig (Veronika), Scott (Erin), grandchildren, Sydney, Sebastian, Sarah (Rob's daughter), Shea, his brother Hermann (Bonnie), and numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents; son Rob, brothers, Gerhardt and Bruno, and sisters, Freida Roloff and Ruth Allard.
Born in Gombin, Poland on June 15, 1941 to Gustav and Lydia Streu, they moved their family to West Germany in 1945 and immigrated to Dauphin, Manitoba in 1951 where he finished his schooling. Hart proudly served in the Canadian Navy from 1961 to 1964 and the CNR in Dauphin and Biggar, Saskatchewan. It was here he met Heather and their lives together began. They married on May 20, 1967 and moved to Winnipeg in 1970 to join Erhardt Streu Floors eventually opening his own store Harts House of Flooring in Selkirk in 1997. They lived in the Fort Richmond area where they raised their three boys, made lasting friendships, opened their doors to all and worked hard until the fall of 2001 when Hart semi-retired to his favourite place, Pleasant Valley, MB. It was here, Hart spent his best days golfing, playing games, visiting with friends and family, sharing stories, riding his bike, curling, skating, and playing his organ.
Even living more than two hours away, Hart continued to work four days/week for many years and then two days a week right up until his illness this past September. He never truly retired and blazed a trail through the flooring industry and the world creating lasting friendships. He had a head for numbers, an old-school work ethic and the charisma and wit that made him a true businessman.
Hart was an avid sports fan. He loved to get together with the boys for a game of golf, tennis, pool or whatever, of course always with a bet on the side. He loved to play cards, especially 500, crib and bridge. He would try anything, was fun to be around and loved to talk. He would talk to anybody, anywhere, no matter what or where, never found a fault in anyone he met, and always found a way to make a connection or find something they shared in common.
He was the best husband, father, uncle, opa, and friend, and was always the life of any event. He took pride in his family and always put their needs and wellbeing before his own. He made each grandchild feel special and was their #1 fan. He appreciated people and was an old school social media king; he didn't need the internet to connect. If you met him for a second, you would never forget him. Thoughts of him would bring a smile to your face. Hard work and honesty were his policy. Success was a by-product but no matter how successful he was he never changed his attitude toward life or people. A role model for many and a supporter for everyone. He celebrated his life every day and will be tremendously missed. Family was so important for him, and you were all family to him. Take a few minutes to remember your favourite moments with Hart, and feel the love .... Rest in Peace is what normally goes here but we promise you there will be no peace in heaven with Hart up there.... We love you.
The family would like to thank Dr. Andani and nursing staff on H7 and H6 at Health Sciences Centre for their compassion and care.

Cremation has taken place and a Celebration of Life will be held at a later date, when all his family and friends can attend.

My late wife Marj and I had the great fortune to get to know Hart and Heather when attending various flooring conferences at several historic Canadian locations. Hart and Heather were a one-of-a-kind couple; Hart’s sense of humor was legendary and Heather the perfect foil for his wit! I was shocked and saddened to hear about Hart.....he was a big man with a big heart and always kind and gentle. I remember the great times we had when our boys were playing hockey in Fort Richmond....I think the parents had more fun than the kids!!!
