SIDNEY GOLD SORONOW

It is with tremendous sadness that the family of Sidney Soronow announce his sudden passing on January 28, 2023. Sid passed away peacefully at the age of 75 at his home in Winnipeg. He spent his final days doing what he loved doing most: practicing law and spending time with his wife and family.
Sid is survived by Ethel, his loving wife of 52 years, and his sons, Steven (Deborah) of Naples, Florida, and Michael (Leanne) of Winnipeg. In addition, Sid leaves four beautiful grandchildren, Robyn, Noah, Janna, and Kylah, as well as his brother Fred (Farah) of Vancouver. He was predeceased by his parents and older brother Morris.
Sid was the middle son of Robert and Rowena Soronow, growing up first in Winnipeg's North End and then River Heights. The friends he made in his youth became his friends for life. Those close to Sid will remember his keen sense of humour and sharp wit, He will also be remembered fondly for his gentle demeanour, generosity, and kind-heartedness.
Sid spent his life in a constant pursuit of knowledge, both in his work as a lawyer and in his personal life. He had a particular affinity for politics and current events, tuning into CNN every evening to make sure he was well informed. He seemed to know everything that was happening around the globe.
Sid earned his Law Degree from the University of Manitoba Law School in 1971, where he was awarded the Gold Medal for highest overall grades in his final year. For more than 50 years, Sid practiced law in Winnipeg with dedication and integrity, and was a mentor to many new law grads through the years, including his son Michael. They were the beneficiaries of his analytical and creative mind, as well as his abundance of patience. They also learned from Sid that everyone must be treated equally, respectfully, and with dignity.
Sid was a talented artist and he had a great appreciation for art and architecture. Although he hadn't painted in many years, he often doodled drawings during the day as a form of relaxation. Sid loved sports, particularly golf, tennis and football, and always made time to watch the Sunday NFL games. He also loved music and had a special fondness for the music of the 1960s, often singing along in his car or with the smart speaker at home. Sid had a zest for life and never stopped living life to the fullest. Age was just a number because he was young at heart.
Winnipeg Beach was Sid's happy place. He went to the same cottage every summer for more than 70 years and truly loved beach life. He was a well known fixture on the sand at the downtown beach with his favourite reclining chair and cooler. On weekends, everyone knew they could find Sid lying in the sun at the beach. He was friends with his neighbours and enjoyed wonderful barbecues, bonfires and parties with them.
Sid gave his family a beautiful life. There were many wonderful vacations in Hawaii, Mexico and Florida, and road trips to various destinations in the United States. He had a big heart and just wanted to enjoy time with his family. He led by example and taught his sons from an early age the importance of hard work and respecting other people. Sid was always patient with his sons, and believed that a gentle and reasoned approach was always the best way to smooth out differences. Sid was a family man at heart and treasured the time he spent at home with his wife and family. Home was his sanctuary, the one place where he could focus on his loved ones and enjoy the simple pleasure of just being all together.
Sid's funeral took place at the Chesed Shel Emes Funeral Chapel, with burial immediately following at the Shaarey Zedek Cemetery on January 31, 2023. The Meal of Consolation was held at the family home.
We are grateful to the pallbearers, Richard Hechter, Len Hirsch, Harvey Levitt, Matthew Levitt, Rob Trachtenberg, and Richard Watson who carried our beloved Sid to his final resting place.
Sid's family would like to express gratitude to all our relatives and friends, as well as to Sid's many clients who mourned with us. The tributes, cards, donations, flowers, and meals were so comforting to us, and reminded us how important and respected our much loved husband, father, grandfather and brother was to so many people. Sid will be with us, in our hearts, forever.

Condolences & Memories (5 entries)

  • Sid, you may not have known it but our family referred to you as the "Diamond Man" nicknamed by one of our daughters a decade back when she was age of 4. Named after the sparkle of one of your rings caught in passing during one of your and Ethel's nightly walks in the neighbourhood. Personally, I always thought it was akin to your personality... Saddened by the news. Be well Ethel and family. - Posted by: Tyler and Rebecca (Neighbours) on: Feb 21, 2023
