Condolences & Memories (7 entries)

  • I only learned about Ruth's passing today from another friend. Ruth gave me my first job in Health Sciences Centre as a Child Life play therapist. I worked for her for three years and found her to be an incredibly kind, nurturing and caring person. Even after I moved on to another department in 1980, Ruth and I had contact and I was happy to keep in touch. On one meeting she even asked me if I would return to work in Child life. That meant a lot to me. We shared "North End roots" and knew many things and people in common. I will always love her for giving me that first real job opportunity and for all that she taught me. My sincere condolences to her family. - Posted by: Valerie Stanowski (Former Employee/Friend) on: Jun 16, 2023

  • I had a feeling tonight and decided to check the Free Press and there was my friend and colleague’s name. 100. For sure as she was bigger than life. She was our mentor, a treasured resource in my early years in the Child Life Department. There was connection, so strong that we intertwined our family experiences, hers with Max and I with my Mon. Thank you Ruth. You may rest. My condolences to your family which you treasured. - Posted by: Marie Buchok (Thomas) (Friend/colleague ) on: Apr 05, 2023

  • Words cannot express my gratitude at having Ruth touch the lives of me and my family. Years ago my infant daughter was admitted to the Children's Hospital and I was as frightened as I had ever been in my life. Ruth entered the room, took her in her arms, sat in the chair and told me that my daughter would be just fine. Something about Ruth and her confident caring manner eased my fears. I will never forget that day. Whenever I found myself at the Children's Hospital over the years I would pop my head into Ruth's office to say hi. I was always greeted with her warm smile. I am sure that there are many families who are lucky enough to have similar stories. - Posted by: Andrea Hamilton (Client) on: Feb 27, 2023

  • My condolences to all of Ruth’s family on her passing in her 100th year. I had the privilege of being hired by, and working with Ruth in child life until her retirement on 1987, and continued to know her. Ruth was so many things to so many people. At Children’s Hospital, through her passion for helping children and families, and her insight and vision, Ruth helped to develop the field of child life, and indeed, was considered a pioneer in the field. She was always warm and welcoming, and could fight like a lion if she needed to defend or fund her programs. All of us who knew Ruth professionally also knew about her role as Baba. We watched and heard stories about her growing family, well aware that she was the touchstone of the Kettner clan. Ruth was a loving, kind, generous, funny, intelligent woman and has left many lasting legacies in both her personal and professional lives. She will be greatly missed, but the cherished memories will live on. I am currently away in Mexico until the end of March and am sorry that I cannot send a card nor attend a service at this time. Please accept my deepest sympathies. I will always remember Ruth with love and respect. Sincerely, Renée Ethans - Posted by: Renee Ethans (Friend) on: Feb 22, 2023
