EVA PHYLLIS HOWARD

March 10, 1924 - February 12, 2023

Our mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, Eva Phyllis Howard, passed away on Sunday, February 12, 2023 at Rideau Park Personal Care Home, less than one month short of her 99th birthday.
Eva was born on March 10, 1924 in Souris, Manitoba. Her early years were spent in the Nesbitt, Carroll and Souris, Manitoba areas. Growing up on farms provided her many joys with her siblings and cousins such as horseback riding and outdoor activities. Times were tough on the prairies during the depression, and she walked many times from Carroll to Souris using the rail line in summer and winter.
During some of the war years, she relocated to Toronto to work in various factories for the war effort. Building Bren Guns was one job she had mentioned over the years. After returning from the East, she worked as an egg grader in Brandon, Souris Creamery, and light housekeeping at homes in the Souris area.
Eva married Lester Lorne Howard in 1949. Les and Eva had two sons Donald and David. The family trucking business, Howard's Transportation and eventually Howard's Van & Storage, had been established many years before in 1929. Les passed away suddenly in 1978. Eva stepped into the role of Manager with her son Donald, and continued operating the business, while David joined the business after completing school.
Eva remarried in 1982 to Ralph William Smith. They both assisted at the business until deciding to retire and spend several winters South and travelling in the motor home.
Eva was predeceased by all of her siblings: Harry, Anne, Helen, and Albert “Bert”, her first husband Les, and her second husband Ralph in 2009.
She is survived by sons Donald (Sally) and David (Marion); grandchildren Grant (Stephanie), Carla (Nick), Allison (Riley), Katrina (Ryan) and Stephen (Mary); great-grandchildren Danika, Bennett, Reid, Hayes, Whitney, Mia and Jackson; and one sister-in-law Doris Giles in Leduc, Alberta.
A graveside service will be held at the Souris and Glenwood Cemetery on Saturday, February 25, 2023 at 11:00 a.m. where Eva will be laid to rest next to her husband Les.
Flowers are gratefully declined.

  • It was a surprise to find this obituary online. I rented a room from the Howard’s in 1960 when I worked at the Royal Bank. I miss that room and our pleasant gracious landlady. - Posted by: JOYCE MARSH (Boarder) on: Feb 25, 2023
