GWEN HAMILTON

(HULYK)

June 12, 1930 - February 23, 2023

On Thursday, February 23, 2023 we said goodbye to our loving mom, grandma and sister, Gwen Hamilton (nee Hulyk), who passed peacefully at the age of 92 years.
Gwen was born in Rossburn, Manitoba to John and Ann Hulyk. She married the love of her life, Mack, and they raised their family in McConnell, MB. When she wasn’t shuttling her boys to hockey or baseball, Gwen drove the school bus, boarded teachers and volunteered for many community events. Gwen and Mack then moved to Holland with Manitoba Pool Elevators, where they lived until Mack retired. Gwen remained working at Mai’s Bridal Shop in Brandon for 2 years until she retired as well. They settled permanently in Brandon and enjoyed camping, boating at Clear Lake and road trips to visit friends and family and catch as many of their grandchildren’s games or performances as they could. Gwen remained in their home in Brandon until her move to Winnipeg in 2019 to be closer to her extended family.
Gwen was a master with a sewing machine. She worked as a seamstress for Mai’s in Brandon until retiring to focus her craft on patching, hemming, and creating fabric masterpieces for her children and grandchildren. When she wasn’t sewing, Gwen was an avid reader, cook and baker. No one ever left her home hungry or without a care package of leftovers, jellies, cookies or her secret famous apple pie’ and a birthday meant an angel food money cake with peanut butter icing.
Gwen was a very kind and giving person, always having cookies made for her neighbors and willing to give help to anyone who asked her.
Gwen will be lovingly remembered by her son Darwin (Deborah); daughter-in-law Del Hamilton; grandchildren Brandi Johnson (Doug), Shayne Hamilton (Billie Jo), Robin Hamilton (Meghan), Kaleigh Hamilton, Shea Hamilton (Alizée) and Cali Hamilton; great-grandchildren Jordan, MacKenzie, Haedyn, Ava, Brett, Leo and Ember; brother Leonard Hullick (Helen) and nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her husband MacNabb “Mack” Hamilton, son Rick, and brother Wilson Hulyk (Mary).
The family will cherish Gwen’s memory privately.
Donations in memory of Gwen may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society, 55 St. Clair Avenue West, Suite 500 Toronto, ON. M4V 2Y7.
Our family wishes to extend our gratitude to the staff at Shaftesbury Residence in Winnipeg and extra special thank you to Ester’s Group Personal Care for their compassion and excellent care.

Condolences & Memories (1 entries)

  • I had the pleasure of meeting Gwen when I was creating a short film on the history of McConnell. I audio-interviewed her and she shared some photos I included in the film. She was still living in her home in Brandon at the time and I was amazed she was still mowing her own lawn, tending to her garden and home. She was as bright as a tack and brought out tea and fresh cookies while I was there. I saw her once more to show her the finished film and she was as warm and friendly as ever. She struck me as a happy, optimistic person who saw life as a glass half full. Condolences to her friends and family. - Posted by: Catharine Parke (Friend) on: May 24, 2023
