CATHERINE ANNE MUZEEN
(CATHERINE ANNE BETTNER)
It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Catherine Anne Muzeen. Cathy passed peacefully on the morning of March 7, after a brief, hard-fought battle with cancer. Cathy is survived by her husband Bob Bettner; her children, Jennifer and Jonathon (Emily); her brother, Rick (Patti); and her beloved pets.
Cathy pursued a degree in social work and an education certification at the University of Manitoba, and worked as a social worker, public school teacher, and program officer with the Women's Directorate before joining Red River College as an instructor. Throughout the course of her career as an educator, she encouraged and uplifted thousands of students, many of whom were new Canadians, Indigenous, or otherwise underrepresented at the postsecondary level. She believed in the purpose of her work with her whole being, particularly through the ACCESS and Southern Nursing programs at Red River College in the fields of nursing and business administration. During her career of over 30 years at Red River College, Catherine took great pride and joy in her work, enjoyed the respect and friendship of her colleagues, and worked passionately with and for her students. First, foremost, and always, Cathy was an educator.
In 1978, Cathy met her husband, Bob. They built a life together, raising two beautiful children while cultivating successful careers, and were partners in retirement. Through the years, family was always what was most important to Cathy. She was fiercely proud of her children, Jennifer and Jonathon, and she worked tirelessly to help and support them in all their endeavours. Cathy's guidance and influence have helped make them the people they are today.
Cathy loved animals of every type. She had a keen eye for wildlife, and would often be the first to spot bears, deer, moose, foxes, eagles, owls, ducks, and birds. Our home was a veritable menagerie of cats that she would occasionally fall in love with and bring home from the local Pet Valu. She also adored her Old English Sheepdogs, which Cathy and Bob would show on weekends as a longstanding hobby.
Cathy's favourite place in the entire world was the family cottage in Lake of the Woods. She spent 64 summers there, beginning when she was a child at the lake with her mother and father and brother. As an adult, she shaped the cottage into our family retreat, which she carefully and painstakingly decorated, landscaped, and maintained with her husband and children. The lake was a place where Cathy would recharge and relax with her family, and it was a place where we have many fond memories of our time with her.
Cathy was our rock, and we feel her absence acutely.
At Cathy's request, there will be no funeral service. In lieu of flowers, donations in Cathy's memory may be made to the Winnipeg Humane Society.
Condolences for the family may be left at www.alternacremation.ca.

I knew Cathy through our families, meeting each other in the 1950s. She was always good humoured, friendly, kind and generous to everyone, and always ready for fun and laughter. I remember her love of animals, and just drew several archangel cards for her: Drew Archangel Bhokpi, AA of birds, and AA Zariel, AA of canines. So perfect as she was always looking after creatures of nature. May peace and provisions to the family flow in abundance, true to the love Cathy mutually shares with her beloved family. - Posted by: Bruce Christie (Friend ) on: Mar 15, 2023

The mixers family lived next door on Riverwood avenue. We watched her grow into a beautiful woman, attended her wedding, and introduced to her children. We moved and lost contact, Her name passed through my thoughts when we visited former neighbours on Riverwood. Reading her story she contributed to Women's Right and education. Condolences to the family. Great memories. - Posted by: Trucia Howard (Former neighbour) on: Mar 14, 2023

Our sincere condolences to your entire family. Jennifer and Jonathon were babies when you moved to your new cottage at Lake of the Woods from Nutimik Lake. Cathy was a beautiful person, loving wife and mother. Her sense of humour was guaranteed and after a day at the beach would say “just tell people you just came from having your hair done in Beausejour “! My sincere condolences to the family on the loss of their rock. I don't remember when I first met Cathy but it was sometime in elementary school and she was very good at making a joke or telling us something that made us smile. At Vincent Massey we occasionally did activities as friends but it was the trip to England that we were on that really gave us a chance to spend time together. Cathy could only be described as a lot of fun and at the same time she took life seriously. I can see from her memorium that she lived a full life and had an effect far and wide on the people she encountered in her career. She was definitely a credit to the world. In fact, I named my cat after her brother Rick but as my cat was female she was called Ricky. I don't know if I ever told her that but I am sure she would have gotten a kick out of it. - Posted by: Ianthe Warner (Friend and classmate from grade school to high school) on: Mar 13, 2023

Very sorry to read of Cathy’s passing. I knew Cathy many years ago when I would play with her brother Ricki. We shared many fun times together, particularly at the Muzeen family cottage. I have not seen her in quite a few years, and was unaware of her significant accomplishments described. I will always remember her terrific sense of humour and her laugh. She was really a wonderful person. My sincere condolences to her family and may you treasure your memories with her. Doug Christie - Posted by: Doug Christie (Old friend ) on: Mar 12, 2023

Bob and children, so very sorry to hear the sad news that Cath is gone. We had many great summers at Clearwater Bay with Betty and all our friends. I regret that in recent years she wasn't around for visits. I will miss her. Take care of each other. - Posted by: Graham Gork (Old friend) on: Mar 11, 2023
