SHEILA MARY ROSS
January 1938 - October 2022

Sheila died peacefully October 1, 2022, in Edmonton at 84 years of age.
Sheila was a Montrealer who moved to Winnipeg in 1976 where she stayed until 1993. She was a trailblazer, a poet, a mother, a friend, a long-time advocate for human rights, and a decades long volunteer at events including the Winnipeg Folk Festival, the Winnipeg Children's Festival, and the Ottawa Folk Festival. Her career in communications spanned decades and brought her back East to the heart of Canada's civil service in Ottawa where she managed her own communications team and garnered awards with the federal government.
A service will be held on Saturday, April 1, at 3:30 p.m. at the St. James Anglican Church at 195 Collegiate St., Winnipeg, MB R3J 1T9. Following the service a Wake will be held in Sheila's honour from 4:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. There will be food and drinks and music and friends and family. Please come and celebrate Sheila with us.
A more comprehensive obituary and date for her interment out East will follow in coming months. Please contact her son 'Tawny' at aytahn@gmail.com for more information.

Condolences & Memories (4 entries)

  • My condolences to you. I missed the Free Press notice in the obituaries, or I would have been at her Celebration of her Life. As a former neighbour in Newman Street, I recall you as the little boy she loved so much. In her work with the Vietnamese refugees, she was working all days and nights with the late Margaret Black to get them settled in Winnipeg. And she went on to more great work in Ottawa, and so on. She was truly a remarkable and talented woman, with so much heart. - Posted by: Monika G. Feist (Friend) on: Apr 05, 2023

  • Dear Tawny, my deepest sympathies to you and your family. Many years ago I met your mom in a writing group in Ottawa, and she stood out for her talent as a poet, and the strength of her character. We will remember her for the legacy she leaves behind. • Tawny sympathies to You, but also acknowledgement of how fortunate Your Mom was to have You by her side helping her for so many years. You had such a wonderfully special relationship! Sheila was a delight to collaborate musically with, especially on our Wolf Moon project, some 20 years ago. Her powerful lyrics, poems and wondrous story-telling was an absolute delight, which I cherish immensely. Scot Dunlop, Ottawa - Posted by: scot dunlop (Family Friend) on: Mar 28, 2023

  • I’m so sorry for your loss. Sheila was a lovely and kind person, who I met though music. She had an obvious and deep love for music, and the folks who made music. My deepest sympathy’s to her family and friends. Lynn Miles - Posted by: Lynn Miles (Friend) on: Mar 27, 2023
