PATRICIA MARGARET (PEGGY) SMITH
(nee DUNCAN)
1932 - 2023
Beloved mother, grandmother, aunt and friend, Peggy passed away peacefully at home in Winnipeg on March 7, 2023, at the age of 90.
She and her brother David H. Duncan (1934-2012) were born in Toronto, Ontario to Irish parents, Emily (nee Clements) (1898-1987) and David J. Duncan (1890-1939), with an older sister, Kathleen remaining in Ireland. While enrolled in the Toronto General Hospital's Nursing Program she met the love of her life, James Donald (Don, Jim, or "JD") Smith (1931-2005). They married in 1954 shortly after her graduation. The couple settled in Clarkson (part of present-day Mississauga, Ontario) and had four children, Mark (Christine), Kathleen, Wendy (Orèl) and Gwen (Mike). Peggy loved nursing and had a varied career, working in the hospitals and in the community. She was always willing to offer health advice along with a cup of tea and a kind word. Peggy and Don lived a good life together and in their later years escaped the cold weather as snowbirds driving to Florida each winter. They decided to move to Winnipeg in 2004 where they were able to celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary with everyone, before Don's death in December 2005. Peggy was extremely proud of her children's accomplishments, and those of her four grandchildren, Callahan, Erin, Nathan, and Reegan. She loved her family and valued her friendships, some of which lasted more than 60 years. Peggy was generous, a great listener and she was always ready to help anyone in need. She had a dry sense of humour, loved reading and music, walking and animals. She lived her life with grace and style and will be greatly missed. Those Peggy leaves behind can take inspiration and comfort from one of her favourite sayings, "Live life, this not a dress rehearsal!"
"Say not in grief she is no more but live in thankfulness that she was".
Cremation has taken place and a private family gathering will be held later.
Donations can be made to the Winnipeg Humane Society or a charity of your choice.
