ERICH KUCH
"Sperling"
With deep sadness we announce the passing of our father and grandfather. Born February 26, 1930, in Sprendlingen, Germany and died February 27, 2023, in Winnipeg.
He will be dearly missed by his children, Eric (Jenn) and Signy (Hugh) and by his grandchildren, Elska and Stefan. Erich was predeceased by his wife Patricia (Eyjolfsson), his parents, Wilhelm and Katharine (Eichler) and his infant brother Johann.
As a young man of 21 in post-war Germany, Erich embarked on the MV Fairsea to start a new life in Canada armed with only an envelope of favourable references. He was an extremely hard worker, always willing to lend a hand where needed. He became a prolific letter writer in an effort to keep in touch with relatives and friends. He regularly travelled back to attend reunions with his tight-knit kindergarten classmates. Erich was renowned for his baking and particularly for his vinarterta making skills. His lessons will ensure the tradition continues. Erich and Patsy enjoyed many years of cottage life and snowbird winters, making the most of their retirement.
Special thanks to all the people who supported Erich in his last years allowing him to remain independent, and a special thanks to the health care aides and staff at Health Sciences Centre wards GH3, GD2 and RR6 who were so professional and caring.
As per his wishes, Erich's body has been donated for research and he requested no formal service.

It is sad to learn about Erich’s passing. Today, I tried to contact him for an invitation to my brother Bernard’s funeral in early June. However, with great sadness my mom and I found out by a Google search the news. I remember Erich’s kindness and compassion through his ability to hear what was going on in my life. His baking is unforgettable when he invited my family and I to the cottage or for Thanksgiving dinners at his place. He was a unique person that I will never forget. RIP. - Posted by: Michael Moosbauer (Son of Erich’s best friend Günter) on: May 21, 2023
