LORNA JACKSON

February 1928 – March 2023

Lorna was born on the family farm near Rathwell, MB 95 years ago. There were few luxuries on the farm at that time, but the family was strong. She had fond memories of collecting eggs from the hen house and of going to her Grandma and Grandpa's for Christmas by horse and sleigh, with heated bricks in the sleigh to keep themselves warm. She attended the one room Gordon Union School until Grade 9, then continued her education in Treherne, MB, where she boarded during the school year. She worked at Stuart's shoe store in Treherne until marrying Kelly Jackson in 1948, who she had met at a dance in Treherne. They moved to London, Ontario where Dad was working at the time, with Mom finding work at Murray-Selby Shoes sewing vamps for ladies footwear. She was quite proud of this work as she was good at it, and made more money than some of the men she knew. Lorna and Kelly returned to Winnipeg for the birth of their first child, and lived in the Wolseley area. In 1954, they moved to the Bourkevale community of St. James, where they lived in the same house for 60 years. Lorna was deeply involved in the community. She volunteered at Bourkevale Community Club for years, serving as president of the ladies executive, organizing annual sports banquets and club functions. Lorna was also involved with the United Church of Canada, attending the Indianford United Church north of Rathwell when she was young, and for years the St. James United Church. She was a member of the St. James Ladies Auxiliary, organizing and working at church events, with the annual Shamrock Luncheon and Christmas Bazaar being two of her favourites.

Lorna and Kelly enjoyed socializing and travelling, and had a close group of friends that they shared many of these occasions with – Jack and Marie, Buster and Shirley, Margie and Wyatt. Family also kept them on the go with grandchildren and great-grandchildren spread out from Ontario to Alberta, visiting and attending as many of their events as they could. They were avid dancers and were members of a local pattern dancing group. Lorna enjoyed curling, winning the Treherne Ladies Bonspiel one year, and started golfing later in life to keep up with Kelly.

Lorna and Kelly were married for more than 72 years, had three children, Joan, Buster and Scott, seven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. Mom was witty, kind and a great mother. May God care for you, as you did for us.

We would like to thank the staff on 2 North at Oakview Place who provided excellent care for Mom during her stay there. A family funeral service and reception will be held at a later date.
