LORNE ARDAIN SHROPSHIRE
It is with deep regret that we announce the peaceful passing of Lorne Ardain Shropshire on April 2, 2023 in his 86th year in Winnipeg, Manitoba.
Husband of the late Jean Marie Shropshire (nee Haliday), survivors: son William, daughter-in-law Sofia Bagnate, brothers, James (Marjorie Clarkson) and Ken, sisters, Gloria and Lorraine.
Born in Newmarket, Ontario, Lorne was determined to see the world and at the age of 16 joined the R.C.A.F. Later, he reenlisted in the Canadian Army, where he served with the Fort Garry Horse. Married in Toronto, ON in 1962. He lived in Germany and France while serving with the Canadian Armed Forces, made three UN Peacekeeping tours: Cypress ’68, Egypt ’78 and Syria ’85. After 30 years of military service, Lorne continued his employment with Emergency Preparedness Canada and returned to academic studies and completed his Bachelor of Arts Degree in History at the University of Winnipeg.
Retirement years were active with many road trips to Prince Edward Island with Jean. Reading, researching and writing about history was a life-long passion, and he had many articles published. Tending his rose bushes in the garden, and volunteering as a tour guide at the historic Dalnavert Museum kept him pleasantly occupied and happy. Lorne was an inspiring force with his creative and often artistic endeavours. Weekend fishing trips with his friend "Chev" (deceased) often resulted in more empty beer bottles than fish!! Lorne dedicated his life to the care and comfort of his wife in her final years, with tenderness, passion and love until her passing in 2017. Their love never stopped.
Special thanks to all the medical staff and team members at the Riverview Palliative Health Centre for providing all the care, comfort and friendship to Lorne. He left us all with courage, strength and dignity. Thank you, Jim and Marjorie, for being here.
