Frank passed away peacefully on Holy Thursday, April 6, 2023, just in time to help Jesus with the Easter Celebrations, he was just shy of his 95th birthday.
He arrived in Winnipeg, Manitoba on July 17, 1953 on the train from Halifax, coming all the way from Cosenza, Italy. His first job was digging basements for new homes, a job he stayed at for a couple of years. He then started working at the Canadian National Railway, where he stayed employed until his retirement in 1989.
In his golden years, he loved his home on Jessie where his garden and friendships flourished. Frank was always busy year-round but the excitement of spring was infectious! The anticipation of getting his hands in the soil was incredible, he would even help the snow melt. A little piece of Italy could always be found in his backyard, there were amazing pole beans, gigantic zucchini, peppers of all kinds, tomatoes, Italian parsley, basil, and oregano to name a few and then there was the apple tree. His dear friend Joe Plastina helped him graft that tree, shared gardening tips, and would often accompany Frank on his daily walks. Regularly they would stop in for daily Mass at the Holy Rosary Church and continue to The Bay downtown.
Often Frank could be heard singing in the kitchen while he prepared some of his favourite dishes; veal scaloppini, pasta fagioli soup and chicken cutlets. Another of Frank’s hobbies was to paint, the painting The Last Supper, Blue Boy and Pinkie were favourites. Frank also puttered a great deal, there was always something that needed to be rearranged. He did however like his afternoon naps in the sun.
He was predeceased by his long-time friend and companion Eunice Watts.
Frank cherished peopled and he was kind, gentle and caring. This was very evident in the way his caregivers loved to be around him and attend to his smallest need.
At this time, we would like to acknowledge and thank all the wonderful health care people who cared for Frank in his last months of his life, he appreciated even the smallest of gentle deeds, and was often heard saying “thanks, you help me”.
Frank will be missed dearly by his special friend Ethel Graham, the neighbours, Leonard, Diane, Tarren and Jeremy Jones, and his niece Rosetta Molinara. To Tarren and Jeremy he was “Grandpa Frank”, the only grandpa they knew. Ethel was “Mama Rosa” to Frank and he was “Pops” to her. Frank also leaves to mourn his sister Maria (Pasquali) Scarpelli of Winnipeg, brother Alfredo (Maria) Maida of Winnipeg, sister Immaculata Vercillo of Italy and numerous other family members, nieces and nephews.
Frank’s faith was a very important part of his daily life, he wasn’t just a participant on Sundays, he lived and breathed all of the teachings of the gospel. He loved, he forgave and also put up boundaries. He was always willing to chat about the wonderful life he had, how happy he was and how blessed his life had turned out. He is happy and at rest. Ciao.
A celebration of his life will be held at Holy Rosary Church, 510 River Avenue on Saturday, April 15, 2023 at 11:00 a.m. Burial has already taken place.
