ANTHONY JOHN BREEN

1932 - 2023

It is with great sadness we share that our loving father and grandfather, Anthony John, passed away peacefully on Monday, January 23, 2023 in Winnipeg after a lengthy illness. Remaining to cherish Anthony’s memory are his children Catherine (Bruce Kjartanson), Teresa (Gerry Vandal), Laura (Blake Smith), David (Trysha Caldwell); grandchildren Melanie and Jonathan Kjartanson, Jennifer (Evan Hodgson), Jeffrey Vandal (Jouie Ada), Emma and Élie Tardiff-Breen; great-granddaughter Audrey May Hodgson, and numerous nieces and nephews. He will be reunited in Heaven with the love of his life, Barbara, and their daughter Carol.

Anthony was born in Toronto, Ontario in 1932. He and Barbara married in 1955, and they began a family. An incredibly hard worker, (he left school and began working as a young teen) Anthony often held multiple side jobs as he pursued his career, the final thirty years of which he spent at Creditel of Canada. He retired as Prairie Regional Manager in 1997. Outside of work, he kept busy entertaining at family gatherings with his jokes and stories, working on projects at home, volunteering in the parish community, and in his later years restoring aircraft at the Western Canadian Aviation Museum. He was a devout Catholic, and a Fourth Degree Knight with the Knights of Columbus, serving in both Winnipeg and Nanaimo. Anthony loved travelling with his family, driving big cars, and losing himself in a book. His laughter and punchlines will live on in the hearts of his children.

We wish to thank the staff of both The Rosewood and Beacon Hill Lodge for their care and compassion during the periods our father resided there. A funeral mass will be held at Mary Mother of the Church in Winnipeg, Tuesday, April 25, 2023 at 11:00 a.m. Interment to follow. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Siloam Mission.

Condolences & Memories (2 entries)

  • John was a friend and mentor. In 1980, he gave me the opportunity to manage the Regina office of Creditel of Canada and provided as much support as was required. Then in 1985, he recommended me to manage the Edmonton office. He was always available to offer advice. Until I retired, whenever I was faced with a problem, I would ask myself “What would John do?” I will always remember him fondly. - Posted by: Jim Orman (Mentor) on: Apr 24, 2023

  • Teresa and family. So sorry to hear of your dad’s passing. Thinking of you at this sad time. - Posted by: Leona Fonseca (Friend ) on: Apr 23, 2023
