SISTER IRENE PRESCOTT SGM

August 4, 1933 - April 17, 2023

Surrounded by her Grey Nuns companions and members of the family, Sister Irène Prescott went peacefully to meet her Lord and Saviour on April 17, 2023, at the of 89 and 66 years of religious profession.
She leaves to mourn the members of her Grey Nuns community, brothers, and sisters: Marguerite, sgm, Louis, Françoise, Lucie (Robert Allard d.) Hélène (Guy Mousseau d.), Georges (Jeannine Ruest d.), Pauline, one sister-in-law: Pearl Basay as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
Sister Irène was predeceased by her parents: Arcadius Prescott and Zéphirine Prescott (Mousseau), brothers and sisters: Eveline, Father Réginald, Father Roland, m.Afr. Rita (René Wilcott d.), Father Henri, Alma, Ernest (Jessie Stewart Paterson Critchton d.) and Gilbert (Pearl Bazay).
Born in St. Boniface on August 4, 1933, Irène was the sixth child of a family of 16 children. The deep faith and Gospel values lived by her parents permeated this beautiful family. This is where Irène discovered her call to serve.
She was also fortunate from grades 1-12, to attend St. Joseph Academy, under the leadership of the Sisters of the Holy Names of Jesus and Mary. After her graduation, she began working at Great West Life Insurance in Winnipeg; however, her desire to follow the Lord in religious life became more vivid in her heart. She decided to join the Grey Nuns on August 5, 1953, and committed herself to God by making her first vows on February 15, 1956, and her final vows on August 15, 1961.
As a young sister, Sister Irène was invited to begin her studies in healthcare. She studied as LPN (License Practical Nurse) and a few years later graduated as Registered Nurse (RN) from Quo Vadis College of Nursing in Toronto in 1970. For the next few years, she dedicated herself with love and compassion in two boarding schools: Lebret and Fort Frances as well as in various healthcare facilities: Infirmary at the Grey Nuns Provincial House, Taché Centre, St. Vital Sanatorium, Gravelbourg Hospital and Chesterfield Hospital.
In 1990, Sister Irène left Manitoba and continued her ministry as a nurse and hairdresser with Grey Nuns at the Mother House in Montreal. She most assuredly touched many lives by her love, joy, and dedication.
After 18 years, Sister Irène came back to Manitoba in 2008 at Despins Residence and continued to help as a sacristan and other various community services. Woman of faith and dedication, Sister Irène was always ready to give a helping hand until her health failed and then she was moved to Actionmarguerite (St. Boniface).
Her funeral will be held at Despins Residence at 151 Despins Street on Thursday, April 20, 2023, beginning with prayer and eulogy at 1:00 p.m. followed by the Eucharist Celebration at 1:30 p.m., celebrated by Father Albert Bouffard, omi.
The Grey Nuns and family wish to thank Residence Despins and Actionmarguerite (St. Boniface) staff, pastoral services and 3DE, for their dedication, love, and compassion towards Sister Irène Prescott.

  • Claude and I would like to offer our condolences to all of the Prescott family in their loss of their sister. Both of our families have known the Prescott family for years. Sister Irene will be sadly missed. Lucie was well known to us, as she married my aunt Eva's brother-in-law, Robert Allard.
