James Douglas Empey passed away peacefully on April 4, 2023 at the Boissevain Health Centre. Doug was born on November 16, 1925 in Grandfather Potters House in the Bidford District. He grew up in the Wapaha District, attending the country school. Doug took an electrical course, and then learned the building trade. In 1957, he took over the farm, and married Phyllis Clark that same year. They raised their 3 children on the farm. Doug’s lifelong hobby was construction; he built several homes and one apartment block in and around Boissevain. Doug and Phyllis retired to town to their new home in 1987. Together, they enjoyed playing cards and trips to casinos. Doug continued to help at the farm until the age of 88! Over the years, many trips were made in Canada and the USA. Doug spent many hours volunteering on projects in town. He was very proud to be from Boissevain!
Doug was predeceased by his beloved wife Phyllis, and his 2 sisters, Dorothy & Margaret, and his 2 brothers Russell and Willard.
Doug is fondly remembered by his son Blair (Debbie), children Amanda, Tannis, Brian and Sarah; daughter Heather Whittleton (Garrett), children Robert (Mae), Tanya MacMillan (Chris), Colin, & Carly; son Mervin, great-grandchildren Bryson and Jade Doty, Scarlett Whittleton, Ensley and Boden MacMillan, sister-in-laws Laura Empey and Verla Clark, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Cremation has taken place. A private graveside service will be held at a later date.
In memory of Doug, donations may be made to Palliative Care at the Boissevain Health Centre or the Boissevain Morton Foundation.
The family wishes to thank Dr. Nell, and all the staff at Westview Lodge, for all the care and compassion shown to Dad in his living there.
