SHIRLEY PAYMENT
Date of Passing: Apr 19, 2023
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemorySHIRLEY PAYMENT
We are sad to announce that Shirley Payment left this earthly plane on April 19, 2023. Her daughter Angela (Murray), son Michael (Jane), her grandkids, great-grandkids, great-great-grandchild as well as many relatives and friends will forever remember her tenacious spirit.
Shirley spent most of her youth on the family farm in Plumas until she headed for the big city of Winnipeg at the age of 17. Within a few years, Shirley was married to Doug, had two children, and was employed full-time at the University of Winnipeg library where she stayed until her retirement. During this time, she obtained both her bachelor and master degrees as a mature student – always advising her grandkids the importance of an education.
As the quintessential social butterfly, Shirley enjoyed talking with everyone. It wasn’t unusual to bump into someone who knew her. When she wasn’t going to a MTC show, learning Ukrainian, or attending a book club meeting, Shirley was hanging out with her Penguin Pals, library coffee group, friends, cousins and many others. Despite being diagnosed with lung cancer 16 years ago, Shirley was incredibly active. She readily attended fitness classes at the Rady Centre, golfed, got her ‘10,000 steps,’ or took in a Tuesday Tai Chi class.
But more importantly, Shirley was dedicated to her family. She was always there to provide a listening ear, give advice and prepare a delicious home cooked meal. Shirley loved taking care of her grandkids and spending quality time with them. She also opened her home to all her family and friends when they came into town, enjoying the opportunity to catch up. We will miss her generous nature, love and smile. The hope that she is dancing with her husband Doug again, brings us some solace at this time.
We would like to say a special thanks to Paul and Therese for providing Shirley some respite and care in her final months, as well as the staff at Riverview, and those who came to visit her.
Shirley’s funeral will be held Thursday, May 11 at 2:00 p.m. at Saint John XXIII, 3390 Portage Avenue, (Rouge Road).
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that a donation be made in Shirley’s name at a charity of your choice because she gave to everyone.
Reception to follow to share memories that we have.

I knew Shirley from the start of my career in 1981 at the University of Winnipeg in the Mathematics and Statistics department. I first met Shirley at the library. She was a very friendly and helpful person at her job in the library. After her retirement she joined our small group of swimmers, three times a week at the Misericordia Hospital, now Misercordia Health Centre pool. And I got to know her more about how cheerful and friendly person she was. Rest In Peace Shirley. My sincere sympathies to family and friends. I always knew who to go to in the era previous to the availability of online journals at the University of Winnipeg, to photocopy articles at 4:30 on a Friday or to advocate for new periodicals. Always helpful, always smiling, Shirley was a pleasure to know. - Posted by: Brian Pettitt (Former colleague (UW Chemistry)) on: May 02, 2023

I knew Shirley at the University. She was always helpful and outgoing in her work. I also saw her regularly at the Rady Centre. I sensed always that she was carrying an illness but she bore it with courage and humour. There is one less cheerful and dedicated person with her passing. - Posted by: Allen Mills (Friend, former colleague) on: May 02, 2023

I was a colleague of Shirley’s at The University of Winnipeg. I met her soon after I arrived in 1987; soon after that, I met her again when I went into a class to talk about Canadian literature and Shirley was in attendance. She had an infectious smile and was one of the friendliest faces on campus. Everyone knew that she would do anything to help anyone in the Library. She was a warm and cheery presence. My deep sympathies to her family. - Posted by: Neil Besner (Former colleague at The University of Winnipeg) on: May 02, 2023

On behalf of the Tuxedo Ladies Golf Club I would like to extend our sincere condolences to Shirley’s family at this difficult time. Shirley belonged to our golf club for many many years making numerous lifelong friendships. In the last few years she was only able to get out a few times to golf but when she came she had a wonderful time. She even managed to come out to our Closing Awards Banquet last fall and our members were thrilled to see her. Her remarkable positive attitude will be remembered by all. May she rest in peace!
