JOE BIG GEORGE

July 2, 1968 - April 20, 2023

Joe completed his journey on Mother Earth late at night on April 20, 2023.

Joe was born in Winnipeg, MB on July 2, 1968, and was the only child of Margaret Big George and Vladimir Crnogorac. Joe spent his early years in Winnipeg, MB and later moved to Fort Frances, ON and would eventually move to various towns and cities in Canada and the United States and finally settle in Manitoba, which he called home for the last 19 years.

Joe was predeceased by his parents and numerous relatives and is lovingly remembered by his cultural / ceremony / spiritual partner Joanna, sister Dawn and his aunt Josephine, numerous cousins, and his traditional lodge family.

Joe would be the first person to tell you that while his life had not always been easy, it was the one he needed to live. The last several months were no exception.

With deep gratitude, we acknowledge, honour, and value the collective of people that surrounded Joe and provided such exceptional care for him throughout his journey with leukemia: Dr. Kevin Brown and all the doctors and nurses on Unit GD6 at Health Sciences Centre, the doctors, nurses, and physiotherapists of the Medicine 1 Unit at Selkirk Regional Health Centre, Interlake-Eastern Regional Health (IERHA) Home Care Program, Jenna Tritthart, John and Mike of Community Paramedics Services, and in his final days, Dr. Donna Puff and nurse Lindsay with the IERHA Palliative Care program.

Joe’s life will be celebrated on Saturday, April 29, 2023, at 2:00 p.m. at the Brokenhead River Community Hall, 320 Veterans Ln, Beausejour, MB, with a potluck feast to follow. As Joe loved both gatherings and feasts, you are invited to bring your favourite Joe stories, pictures, songs, and a dish to share with him and those in attendance.

Flowers are gratefully declined but you are encouraged to spend time in nature, on the land, or taking a drive while blasting some heavy metal music, all things Joe loved.

  • Joe was a friendly guy who always had a smile on his face. I was shocked and saddened to hear of his passing, especially at such a young age. My condolences to his family and all who loved him. - Posted by: LB (Co-worker) on: May 09, 2023
