IDA MARIE APPELMANS

January 24, 1926 - April 29, 2023

Peacefully, our beloved mother and grandmother passed at home with family by her side.

She leaves to mourn her four sons Raymond, Robert (Tannis), René and Roger; grandchildren Mariah, Hope and Frankie; and numerous nieces, nephews and dear friends. She was predeceased by her beloved husband Frank, her parents Georges and Eugénie LaFortune (née Guay), brothers Joseph, Marcien, Hubert, and Edouard and sisters Irene, Berthe, Jeannette, Cécile, Thérèse, Marguerite, Yvonne, Georgette and Anita, her parents-in-law, brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law. Ida was the last surviving member of her generation.

She attended Winnipeg College, taught elementary school, and went on to work with the Children’s Aid Society, Winnipeg Hydro and Supercrete Ltd.

It was at Supercrete that she met Frank. After a few years of courting, they were married on August 8, 1953 at St. Mary's Cathedral. After their first house on LaVerendrye Street, seeking a more rural setting for their growing family, Ida and Frank built a house on St. Anne's Road. They were instrumental in the success of Echo-Lite Aggregate, a building supply company. In the early 70s, Ida and Frank started a nursery and garden centre in St. Vital, Arbo Flora, which developed into the family business. Together, they enjoyed growing plants in the greenhouse. Ida became an accomplished florist applying her artistic talents and creating countless floral arrangements for funerals, weddings and special occasions. As the city expanded around the garden centre, Ida oversaw the residential development of Appelmans Bay and LaFortune Bay.

Throughout her life, Ida was a loving wife and mother, very devoted to her family. She happily cared for her ageing mother in the family home and in later years, was always ready to assist an ailing sibling. Through her caring and generous nature she touched the hearts of many. She was very strong in her faith. She was also an active member of the community, serving on the St. Vital school board, strongly advocating for French education, leading the census, managing the electoral process as returning officer, supporting her favorite political party and advocating for the common good. She enjoyed several trips in Canada and to Belgium to visit family throughout the years. She hosted annual New Year family get togethers. She was thrilled to become grandmother on the arrival of Mariah, Hope and Frankie. More recently, despite declining health, Ida continued to maintain connection with family and friends.

The family would like to extend heartfelt thanks to her family doctors, Dr. Prenovault and Dr. Marie Loewen, for their outstanding and dedicated care. Also, we wish to express our deepest appreciation and gratitude to the many home caregivers who assisted her over the last few years including Marites, Jennifer, Tammy, Teri and Baljeet. A special thank you to the palliative team including Sean, Linda and Sophie for their exceptional support in the last few weeks.

Prayers presided by Rev. Father Geoffrey Angeles will be held at Desjardins Funeral Chapel, 357 DesMeurons Street, on Tuesday May 9, 2023 at 7:00 p.m. Mass of the resurrection will be celebrated at St. Mary's Cathedral, 353 St. Mary Avenue, on Wednesday morning May 10, 2023 at 10:00 a.m. Interment will take place at Woodridge Parish Cemetery on Thursday.

  • Our families have been friends for decades. We enjoyed countless get togethers and dinners and rang in the new year at many of those terrific parties that were hosted by ‘Auntie’ Ida and ‘Uncle’ Frank. So many happy memories! I remember her kind, yet strong presence and how she was able to make everyone feel welcome. We are thinking of Raymond, Robert, Rene and Roger, and hope the memories of your mom will help you through this difficult time. Please accept our heartfelt condolences from Laura, Franca (Ida’s Godchild) and Nina Bisutti. - Posted by: Laura Kryger (Family Friends) on: May 09, 2023

  • Ida was a great lady. Wife to Frank, mother to four and a florist to all of South St. Vital before any malls were built or any supermarkets. Arbo Flora is still operating when all the other garden centres have closed or moved. Ida was the driving force. Our condolences to her four sons, Raymond, Robert, Rene and Roger and to their families. Peter and Sandra Kaufmann - Posted by: Peter and Sandra Kaufmann (Long time friend) on: May 08, 2023
