MARY GIARDINO

It is with extreme sadness that Mary Giardino, loving mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, etc. passed away peacefully on May 6, 2023, surrounded by her family. Mary was one of the strongest women to walk this earth and we were blessed to have her as the matriarch of the family.
Mary was predeceased by her husband Sergio Giardino, daughter Joanne, sister Linda Giardino, her parents and many others, who we like to think were waiting for her to arrive and are now having quite a party. She is survived by her sons, Frank (Lesley), Richard (Jennifer) and her four grandchildren, Sergio, Isabella, Santino and Scarlett Giardino. She is also survived by her brother Mike (Erin) and numerous nieces, nephews, other family and friends.
Mary, born on May 13, 1933, to Frank and Annie Cosentino in Winnipeg, MB, immediately brought joy and laughter into the world. In 1961, she married Sergio Giardino and went on to have three children, Frank, Joanne and Richard.
Mary was a fiercely dedicated mom to her children. Family came first and was above all else to Mary, a value she instilled in all those around her. Mary was a legend in the kitchen. She loved cooking and baking and no one ever left her house without a full belly. Her food will go down in history, as well as all of her famous recipes that will be passed down for generations to come - though none of us will ever do them justice. Known to all as “Momma G” she became a second mother to all her kids' friends and was beloved by all who had the honour of knowing her. Above all else Grandma loved spending time with her grandchildren feeding and spoiling them. Mary’s grandchildren were truly the loves of her life and she couldn’t have been more proud of them.
Mary was a strong woman who faced every challenge in her life with courage and dignity. Mom lived in her own home and was independent right up to the end of her life which was exactly how she wanted it to be. She never wanted to be a burden, didn’t want the kids “spending their money” on paying for a care home for her but mostly she didn’t want people fussing and worrying about her. The hole left by her absence will be impossible to fill.
Special thanks go to the doctors who cared for her throughout her life and the doctors, nurses and healthcare staff at St. Boniface Hospital who were so kind and caring over the last week. We would like to especially thank Mary’s brother Mike and his wife Erin for their loving care of Mom in the last few years, helping her and taking her to medical appointments, etc. Saying thank you isn’t enough.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in Mary’s name to a charity of your choice.
Early condolences will be received 11:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Friday, May 12. Funeral services are scheduled to begin at 11:30 a.m. with a reception and condolences directly after, for those that wish to stay, at E.J. Coutu & Co Funeral Home, 680 Archibald Street, Winnipeg MB, with Father Sam Argenziano presiding.
Mom, we will love you, remember you and miss you forever.
