JACK MCMUNN
John Welland “Jack” McMunn passed away on Friday, May 5, 2023 at Hillcrest Place.
Jack was born on December 8, 1930 to Gwen and Jim McMunn in the Ewart district west of Reston, MB. His sister Joan completed the family a few years later. Life was hard in the dirty thirties – Dad said there were lots of grasshoppers and if the hoppers wanted to move to a newer area they had to pack a lunch. His winter time was spent on the ice in the Ewart curling rink (one sheet): he, his father and A.M. Watt were part of a rink that were known as the Ewart foursome.
Jack started school in Ewart but completed high school in Reston. Upon graduation in 1948, he started a career with the Bank of Montreal that lasted forty-one years. As a banker he moved often and could list several communities in Manitoba and Saskatchewan as home: Reston, Unity, Battleford, Swan River, North Battleford, Neepawa, Wynyard, Portage la Prairie, Yorkton, Regina, Rosthern, and Brandon. He looked on Brandon as his home and took early retirement instead of another transfer. He was honoured to be appointed manager of the main branch in Brandon in 1970 and held that position for over 15 years. He was always very proud of the bank’s position and staff in Brandon.
He met and married Mabelle Broley while in Unity. They had two children, Joy (Terry) and Jim. The family grew with the addition of grandchildren: Todd (Paula), Tara, Scott (Candace), and Michelle (Travis). He was always happy to see the great-grandchildren: Piper, Jasper, Aria, Spencer, Kashton, and Kiev.
He was later a partner to Doreen Lovatt, mother of Donna Charney, Barry Lovatt, and Deb (Bruce) Beddome. Jack and Doreen enjoyed their summer retirement life in the fifth wheel trailer at Shoal Lake.
Jack’s request was for there to be no formal funeral service and to have Jim and Joy bury him in the McMunn family plot next to his grandparents, parents, sister and wife.
