Ken passed away unexpectedly after a brief hospital stay on May 10, 2023 surrounded by his immediate family in Brandon, where he has lived since 1991.
Ken was born May 3,1956 to George and Anna (Asmundson) Burnell. He was the fourth of five boys and grew up in Westbourne, MB. Ken took his schooling in both Westbourne and Portage la Prairie, where he met and married Marla Greenlay of Portage. They had two daughters – Melinda and Heather. Following Marla’s passing, Ken later married Hellen (Parker) who brought her two sons – Trevor and Tyler into the mix.
Ken worked various jobs until he was hired by Royal Bank after finishing his business degree at Red River College. His career saw him and his family living and working in Portage, Ste Rose du Lac, Russell, Wawanesa and eventually Brandon. After Ken left RBC, he joined Edward Jones Investments in Brandon as an Investment Advisor and helped his clients for many years.
Ken volunteered his time with Lions Clubs in all the towns he lived in, plus he enjoyed his time with Provincial Exhibition events.
Ken’s love of 70’s music, cooking, entertaining, and driving his classic car is what kept him busy in his retirement.
Ken was predeceased by his parents, his first wife Marla, his in-laws and many aunts and uncles. He leaves to mourn his passing his wife Hellen, daughters Melinda (Chris) Henderson and Heather Burnell, stepsons Trevor (Carey) Pod and Tyler (Terralyn) Pod; grandkids Marla Henderson; Tyrus and Ryker Pod. Ken also leaves his brothers Garth (Linda); Clint (Elaine); Randy; Brad and their families, along with many Asmundson relatives.
A memorial service will be held at Brockie Donovan Chapel, 332 – 8th Street on Saturday, May 20, 2023 at 1:00 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society, 193 Sherbrook St, Winnipeg, MB, R3C 2B7.
